If you’ve never seen a drag show, you’re missing out on a really great time. They’re a mix of high-energy performances, comedy, music, and fierce fashion, all wrapped up in an atmosphere that’s welcoming and celebratory. And if I ever plan a visit down under, I’m buying advanced tickets to see Kara Zmatiq, Australia’s most famous queen. And if her new single Slay is any indication, it’s going to be fun.
“This song was born from my own experiences—the struggles, the setbacks, the moments I was told I wasn’t enough, and the realization that I never needed anyone’s approval to shine,” Kara remarks. “Growing up, I faced immense pressure from the church, family members, and society to conform. [it] is my battle cry—it’s a declaration that no matter how many times I was pushed down, I would always rise.”

“Slay” is pure fire from start to finish. Recorded at the legendary Studios 301 – home to iconic recordings by Madonna, P!nk, Lady GaGag, and more, and polished to perfection by mixing and mastering genius Leon Zervos. Sonically, the song is reminiscent of much of Gaga’s work, but the one track it reminds me of the most isn’t from her—it’s Kelly Clarkson’s Miss Independent. It has the same sultry groove that erupts into an unapologetic explosion of confidence and defiance. The contrast between the smooth verses and the electrifying chorus is transformation, as if the song is breaking free from restraint and stepping fully into its own power.
Kara pours her heart into every beat as if she has something to prove. But in fact, she does. “A big part of my journey, and what SLAY represents, is resilience in the face of people who try to dim your light,” says Kara.
It’s bold and empowering, reminding you to own your power, be unapologetically you, and conquer whatever comes your way.
