Stripped: Christina Aguilera’s Landmark Album is Still Influencing Female Artists 20 Years Later

In 2002, Christina Aguilera released her sophomore album, Stripped, which has since become a significant milestone in pop history. This album marked Aguilera’s exploration of self-identification and self-declaration and paved the way for many of today’s mainstream pop stars. With its wide range of music styles and powerful lyrics, Stripped continues to influence and resonate with audiences even after fifteen years.

But at the time of it’s release, any suggestion this former Mouseketeer would do anything influential would have been met with swift and brutal derision from critics.  The Village Voice described it as “nü-Mariah on mood stabilizers, extended with pseudo-pastiches of semi-popular songs.” Entertainment Weekly‘s David Browne gave it a C+ and said Aquilera was “afflicted with Premature Serious Artist Syndrome” while exhibiting “plenty of elastic skill but little joy.” Slant Magazine‘s Sal Cinquemani, in all his pretentious glory, wrote that it was “overproduced and overwrought.”

During the release of Stripped, Aguilera was embracing her edgy persona, known as “Xtina,” through her notorious “Dirrty” video and promotional activities. However, due to the limited exposure opportunities at the time without platforms like YouTube and streaming services, Aguilera could only showcase a fraction of the album’s content during release week. The second single, “Beautiful,” was the only song from Stripped that received significant radio play the following month. Nevertheless, as time has passed, Aguilera’s multifaceted sides, displayed through the singles from Stripped, such as her vulnerable empowerment in “Beautiful,” rebellious attitude in “Fighter,” feminist anthem in “Can’t Hold Us Down,” and introspective hopefulness in “The Voice Within,” have influenced contemporary pop stars like Rihanna, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande.

What sets Stripped apart – aside from is its provocative cover – is its astonishing range of musical styles. While her counterparts, like Britney Spears, adopted dance-pop as her signature style and wholly owned that space, others like Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, and P!NK struggled to find their musical identities. But Christina fearlessly experimented with different genres and aimed to showcase her diverse influences and sounds on Album No. 2. The album’s 20 tracks incorporate elements of Latin-pop and flamenco in “Infatuation,” neo-soul in “Loving Me 4 Me,” jazz and funk in “Impossible” and “Underappreciated,” rock in “Fighter,” and gospel in “Soar” and “Keep on Singing My Song.” Aguilera’s ability to deliver captivating performances on each track was complemented by collaborations with artists like Linda Perry, Lil’ Kim, Dave Navarro, Alicia Keys, Redman, and more.

Christina Aguilera – Beautiful (Official HD Video)

Stripped, with its fearless exploration of different genres and influences, has undoubtedly influenced a new wave of pop stars. Rihanna, like Aguilera, effortlessly incorporates diverse influences throughout her albums, showcasing her versatility. Ariana Grande’s recent albums, My Everything, and Dangerous Woman, also demonstrate a wide range of genres and influences, evident in songs like “Side to Side” and “Into You.” Miley Cyrus, in her album Bangerz, effortlessly transitions from sassy, Salt-N-Pepa-inspired tracks to poignant ballads, exemplified by her hit single “Maybe You’re Right.”

Christina Aguilera – Fighter (Official HD Video)

Beyond the musical diversity, Stripped gave listeners a glimpse into Aguilera’s personal journey of self-discovery. By presenting herself as “stripped,” Aguilera aimed to peel back layers and reveal the emotions and experiences that shaped her as a person and a vocal powerhouse. This included embracing her darkness, fears, and insecurities. For example, the penultimate track, “I’m OK,” delves into Aguilera’s childhood experience witnessing domestic abuse, while “Walk Away” explores her struggle to leave a toxic relationship. Similarly, the song “Infatuation” reveals her reflections on her first love with former dancer Jorge Santos. Other contemporary artists, such as Demi Lovato, have also taken inspiration from Aguilera’s openness and vulnerability. In Lovato’s album, Tell Me You Love Me, the song “Daddy Issues” explores how her complicated relationship with her estranged father impacts her love and sex life.

Stripped not only showcased Aguilera’s musical evolution but also her visual transformation. Through edgier makeup, outfits, and daring hair choices, Aguilera visually marked her growth and artistic expression. She boldly experimented with jet-black hair and used piercings as a self-expression and coping mechanism. She pushed the boundaries of fashion with bold dresses, cheeky pins, and revealing ensembles. Contemporary artists like Rihanna have also undergone similar artistic jumps, with her Rated R era marked by a darker image and more provocative style.

Another significant facet of Stripped was Aguilera’s bold embrace of her own sexuality. The album’s tone was adventurous, venturing into unexplored territory and challenging societal norms. This fearlessness resonated with audiences then, and its repercussions can still be felt today. Aguilera’s exploration paved the way for conversations about sexuality in popular music, leading to more sexually empowered artists emerging over the years, each embracing this power in their unique ways and captivating audiences with provocative personas.

Stripped is an extraordinary compilation that demands attention from start to finish. With a perfect blend of deep cuts and chart-toppers, this musical masterpiece showcases Aguilera’s immense talent and artistic evolution. Each track on Stripped is a captivating work in its own right.

Unleashing the Wild Side – “Dirrty”

“Dirrty” serves as a visceral introduction to Aguilera’s new era. This explosive track discards the coy sensibilities of her previous hit, “Genie in a Bottle,” and fearlessly embraces a raw and aggressive sound. With a clear message that still resonates today, “Dirrty” showcases an unapologetic celebration of female empowerment and unabashed sexuality.

Breaking Down Gender Barriers – “Can’t Hold Us Down”

One of the album’s standout songs, “Can’t Hold Us Down,” not only serves as the thesis statement for Stripped but also serves as a battle cry against the double standards ingrained in both pop music and society. This empowering anthem features Lil Kim, Aguilera’s fellow femme fatale from the iconic “Lady Marmalade” collaboration. Even today, the track remains relevant, challenging societal norms and promoting a sexually positive image.

    Embracing Independence – “Walk Away”

“Walk Away” is a slow-burning confessional that explores the resistance to seduction. Expressing her vulnerability, Aguilera eloquently sings about the deceptive nature of a relationship, comparing it to artificially sweet candy. This captivating track showcases Aguilera’s ability to convey raw emotions with heartfelt lyrics.

    Triumph Over Challenges – “Fighter”

Inspired by Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor,” “Fighter” carries the torch of resilience and strength. This empowering anthem perfectly captures the determination and grit needed to overcome obstacles. With its powerful lyrics, “Fighter” quickly became synonymous with training montages in numerous boxing movies.

    A Universal Anthem – “Beautiful”

The megahit “Beautiful” stands tall as an anthem for people from all walks of life. It earned Aguilera a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and resonated with individuals worldwide. This powerful ballad embraces self-acceptance, spreading a message of love, empowerment, and embracing one’s true self.

    Exploring Latin Roots – “Infatuation”

“Infatuation” allows Aguilera to embrace her Latin roots while also serving as a love letter to the intriguing bad boys she often found herself attracted to. This track showcases Aguilera’s versatility as an artist and her ability to explore different musical styles effortlessly.

A Celebration of Sexual Liberation – “Get Mine Get Yours”

In “Get Mine Get Yours,” Aguilera fearlessly embraces sexual exploration, delivering an anthem for one-night stands and uninhibited passion. This track showcases Aguilera’s confidence and unapologetic approach to embracing her desires.

Revealing Vulnerability – “Loving Me 4 Me”

Drawing inspiration from Janet Jackson’s R&B stylings, “Loving Me 4 Me” reveals Aguilera’s softer and introspective side. This soulful ballad highlights the importance of self-love and acceptance, capturing the listener’s attention with its heartfelt lyrics.

    Unexpected Intimacy – “Impossible”

“Impossible” surprises listeners with its intimate and captivating jazz lounge vibe. With the assistance of renowned producer and pianist Alicia Keys, this track showcases Aguilera’s versatility and ability to delve into different musical genres.

A Moving Conclusion – “The Voice Within”

“The Voice Within” feels tailor-made for the closing credits of an underdog movie, with its heartfelt lyrics and inspiring message. Aguilera’s vocals are at their most powerful, leaving a lasting impact on listeners.

    A Surf-Rock-Friendly Shriekfest – “Make Over”

With the help of songwriter Linda Perry, Christina Aguilera unleashes her gritty side in “Make Over.” This track brings a surf-rock vibe that demands attention. Perry’s influence not only adds depth to the song but also showcases Aguilera’s ability to deliver powerful vocals while maintaining control and finesse.

A Harmonious Power Ballad for Road Trips – “Cruz”

“Cruz” takes listeners on a journey with its harmonious power ballad sound. This track is the perfect companion for road trips, as it celebrates leaving behind all the troubles and embracing freedom. Aguilera’s vocals soar, melting hearts and igniting a sense of hope and adventure in the listener.

Inspiring Hope through Mariah-esque Theatrics – “Soar”

Remember the trailer for Jessica Alba‘s movie “Honey”? Well, the track “Soar” made an appearance in it, and it continues to inspire listeners with a message of hope. Aguilera’s Mariah-esque theatrics elevate the song to new heights, making it an anthem for those who dare to dream and reach for the stars.

Confronting Childhood Demons – “I’m OK”

The Vulnerable Vocals In “I’m OK” surprises her audience by addressing a difficult topic – domestic abuse. With bravery and vulnerability, she confronts her own childhood demons and shares her story with the world. The raw emotions and delicate vocals in this track showcase Aguilera’s growth as an artist and highlight her ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level.
