Growth always looks sexier after the fact. You see the woman who finally knows herself and think, damn, she has her shit together. You rarely see the months when everything feels two sizes too small and she is quietly figuring out what still belongs. Sierra Velez puts ‘Growing Pains’ inside that uncomfortable middle, where becoming somebody stronger can feel awkward as hell while it is happening. She wrote the song during a period of transition, and that uncertainty stays right beside the confidence. There is something hot as hell about finally deciding you are worth the work, especially when you stop pretending the process has to look pretty.

The production on ‘Growing Pains’ wraps that transition in soulful R&B and neo-soul, using atmospheric live instrumentation alongside an intimate vocal from Sierra. The sound stays close to her rather than making personal growth feel like some giant inspirational speech. Thank fucking God. Her delivery carries enough softness to let the uncertainty breathe while the arrangement keeps pointing forward. As the first glimpse of her forthcoming EP Becoming, the track introduces a chapter where Sierra is clearly interested in what happens when she trusts the woman emerging from all this emotional renovation.
She starts with the part most of us eventually have to admit to ourselves: “No, I never really put me first / Oh, it’s no wonder why I gotta do the work / I don’t really Understand why it’s on me / But whatever I’ll be much better / Than what became before me.” That “whatever” is such a good little tell because she sounds mildly annoyed that self-awareness apparently comes with homework. Same, babe. Then she gives herself the rule she plans to live by: “Uncomfortable is how it oughta be / If that’s what it takes to be a better me.” Sierra understands that the squeeze is part of growing into the next version, and she sounds ready to wear the damn thing until it fits.
The hook gives the discomfort a pulse with “Ooh what a feeling / Growing pains hit different / You can get through this / You can get through anything.” I like that she talks to herself with the confidence you usually save for your best friend in a bathroom mirror. By “Didn’t know / Know how to cross the line / This hit different / Now that I’m on the other side,” she has crossed into a version of herself she could barely picture earlier. Then “It’s gonna get hard before it gets good / Usually I’m the one to be misunderstood” lets one last bruise show. She has learned enough to keep moving while still remembering what the old version of her carried.

Sierra Velez is a New Jersey-born, Austin-based singer-songwriter with Palestinian and Puerto Rican roots, and that mix of backgrounds gives her emerging R&B identity a little more texture than the generic newcomer bio usually manages. Her debut single ‘Lovin’ On Me’ arrived earlier this year with a much flirtier relationship to self-love, earning a KUTX Song of the Day feature along with placement on TIDAL’s Pop & B playlist. Now ‘Growing Pains’ turns that confidence backward to examine what it took to get there. With Becoming on the way, Sierra is building her first body of work around self-discovery while letting listeners meet her before every damn answer has been neatly figured out.
That is where ‘Growing Pains’ feels most honest. Sierra already knows the woman on the other side is worth becoming, even while the transition pinches in places she would rather it didn’t. Growth can be sweaty and uncomfortable while you are inside it then one day you look in the mirror and realize the new version fits beautifully. Sierra sounds damn good growing into hers.
