I’ve met too many men who think having an opinion about my life makes them important. The ones who sit there analyzing every goddamn choice like I asked for their assessment. Like they’re doing me a favor by pointing out I’m “too much” or “a little intense” or whatever bullshit they’re using this week to explain why I make them nervous. He doesn’t say it outright. He performs concern. He asks loaded questions. He critiques shit that’s none of his fucking business while pretending he cares. And the worst part? He actually believes he’s helping. Meanwhile I’m sitting there thinking, who the fuck are you anyway? What makes you think I need your input on how I live?
Shannon Darcy gets it.
“Control Freak” is what happens when you’re done explaining yourself to men who peaked at fake-polite. The track opens with “So come sit down, let me pour you a drink / I wanna hear what you think / Let’s talk about the reasons why you hate me.” That’s not an invitation. That’s a dare. She’s baiting him. Let’s hear it. All of it. Every petty judgment you’ve been sitting on. Go ahead.
Then she flips it. “I like to think I’m a decent gal / Maybe a little fucked up in my head / But I promise that I mean well.” She knows who she is. Flawed, sure. But she means fucking well and she’s sick of men who can’t handle that. The line that kills me? “I mean, who are you anyway? Why don’t you get your priorities straight / What, you don’t like it? I’m speaking my damn mind / Go bother someone else, it’s my life.”

Yeah. That’s it right there.
The chorus hits and she stops pretending to be patient. “Control freak, a goddamn control freak / With a spiralling ego and too much to say / It pisses me off that fake smile on your face.” She’s not subtle about it. She’s calling him out directly. The guy who won’t shut the hell up about your choices while performing this smug little grin like he’s above it all. “Your whole facade, it’s amusing and kind of confusing / Seriously, get a grip.”
Production on this is gritty alt-rock energy without trying to be anything other than pissed off. Recorded with producer Jim Hustwit, the track sounds raw as shit. Guitars crunch. Drums punch. Shannon’s vocals snarl when they need to. It’s cathartic without being polished. You can scream along to this or you can blast it on repeat. Both work.
Second verse goes harder. “I know I’m not your conventional gal / Just a little jagged around the edge / And I swear sometimes I can be too much / But you judge and judge and I’m all out of luck.” She’s done apologizing for being intense. Done softening herself so men feel comfortable. “So what d’you get out of this anyway / Prancing around with too much to say / What, you got nothing else to do with your time / Go plan your day instead of fucking up mine.”
That last line. Perfect.
By the bridge she’s not even arguing anymore. “Honestly, did I even ask your opinion / Just shut up / Who are you anyway / You’re whinging and moaning about things that shouldn’t even matter to you.” No build-up. No warning. Just the truth. She’s exhausted. She’s furious. She’s over him.

“Control Freak” came from a moment of pure frustration. Fed up, pissed off, done being walked over by men who think they have the right to control who you are and how you live. The track leans fully into the petty and owns it. It’s sharp. Sarcastic as hell. It turns anger into empowerment with a knowing smirk.
If there’s a guy already coming to mind when you hear the words “control freak,” yeah. This one’s for you.
I’ve spent enough time managing men’s feelings about my choices. Enough time listening to opinions I never asked for from guys who have zero stake in my life. This track is what I should’ve said three conversations ago. What I’ll say next time some dude decides my existence is his business.
Shannon Darcy wrote the fuck-off anthem I needed. She said it. I felt it.
Listen or don’t.
