I’ve had moments where I wanted everything to stop for a second, like I could reset the rhythm and step into something new. That’s the feeling Sébastien Tellier bottles in his new track ‘Refresh’. It arrives five years after his last record, Domesticated, and it’s also the first music he’s shared since joining the Because Music roster. The release feels like the start of another chapter, a quiet but confident reintroduction.
Tellier’s career has always been about reinvention. When La Ritournelle dropped in 2004, it stamped Tellier’s name across the French Touch wave, and two decades later it still carries enough weight to be played at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Since then, he’s drifted between electronic gloss, stripped-back folk, and glossy pop experiments. Tracks like Universe, L’Amour et la violence, Divine, and Cochon Ville mark the trail, each one its own detour, but always unmistakably his.

‘Refresh’ came together with his longtime collaborator Amandine de la Richardière, and this time Tellier widened the circle. He brought in SebastiAn, whose name is stamped all over the French electronic underground, and Oscar Holter, a producer tied to some of the biggest modern pop records from The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry. Their fingerprints are clear, but they don’t drown him out—the track still moves with Tellier’s sense of intimacy, only now it carries a broader weight, built for more than one world at once.
Tellier describes it this way: “It’s a track about renewal, rebirth, failures, and the ceaseless cycle of starting over. It’s about changing internal processes at certain moments in life in order to keep moving forward, to reinvent oneself, to continue existing—like an animal shedding its skin, or like reprogramming computer software to survive inner chaos. And always rolling the dice again, over and over.”

That imagery is all over the production. When he sings about shedding skin, the synth textures scrape and shimmer like something peeling away, exposing the pulse beneath. Renewal here is messy and physical, more survival instinct than polished makeover. The beat settles low and steady, circling his lyric about throwing dice—like testing whether you’re ready to gamble on another version of yourself.
The visuals underline the point. Tellier partnered with Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and together with AI-generated imagery, they built a look that’s elegant but off-kilter. The pictures play with distortion and refinement, teasing at the idea of whether the artist—famous for his imposing beard—might one day strip it away. That possibility becomes a metaphor for the music itself: holding onto identity while daring to change its shape.
‘Refresh’ takes its time. It doesn’t chase spectacle, it draws you closer measure by measure. The track feels like an artist opening the door into his next life, and knowing exactly how to make you want to follow. By the time it ends, you’re left ready to start again, to play it back, to see where he’ll take you next.
