My main guy and I did the whole “just friends” thing for almost a year and honestly? Embarrassing. We both knew. Our friends definitely knew. His roommate knew and he’d never even met me. I’d show up to hang out in an outfit I definitely didn’t put together for someone I was “just friends” with, and we’d sit so close on the couch that breathing felt like a decision, and then I’d go home and tell my group chat nothing was going on. The flirting had that particular charge to it where every joke lands a little too well, and every goodbye hug lasts two seconds longer than it should, and did he just ‘accidentally’ brush against my ass? And you spend the whole drive home replaying it like a highlight reel. I was fully gone for this guy and performing this ‘chill friend’ shit so hard I deserved an award. Olivia Ryan’s ‘More Than Friends’ is every single second of that set to bump and grind R&B that makes your whole body lean in.
Olivia is a 23-year-old Pop/R&B artist from Atlanta (is there something in the fucking water there??) raised in Roswell, and she has been making music since she was sixteen. Real talk, her résumé already hits harder than most artists twice her age. She built a platform on TikTok, did a music reality show called Song House Live, and won a challenge that landed her a Capitol Records release, “Dead Sea,” under her birth name Olivia Boeyink. She appeared in music videos for Grace Gaustad and is now at SCAD studying Graphic Design. The music never stopped through all of it. Influences are Ariana Grande, Tate McRae, and Kehlani, and you can hear all three in her DNA without losing anything that’s purely her own. ‘More Than Friends’ is her coming out of the damn hot girl vault swinging.

The song opens mid-craving, already deep in it. ” Baby just tell me you love me / I’ll be right there when you need me / all of these feelings they go deep / you’re the one I was supposed to meet. “ That last line right there. “You’re the one I was supposed to meet” is not a casual feeling, that’s the terrifying realization that this person arrived in your life and rearranged something permanent. She’s not asking for something casual here. She already knows what this is, she just needs to hear it first.
And listen – the pre-chorus is where the negotiating starts. “I just wanna be your lover / we can keep it undercover / I’ll give you all of the time you need / just tell me that you’ll come back to me.” “We can keep it undercover” has so much going on in five words. It’s a reassurance and a quiet desperation all at once. That’s the scary-ass part of wanting someone this badly – the compromises you start making in your head before they’ve even agreed to anything.
Okay but the second verse is where Olivia goes fully unguarded. “Maybe it’s bad for me / to want you so desperately / if I’m not what you need / it would be a tragedy / but I’m still on my knees / beggin’ you to change your mind.” Down on her knees and owning it completely. No playing it cool, no pretending she could take it or leave it. That verse destroyed me because I have been exactly there, knowing the wanting is probably making me look unhinged as fuck and going right on wanting anyway. Olivia wrote this song because this is literally how her relationship with her now-fiancée started. “I didn’t know for sure if she felt the same way,” she said, “so we just didn’t talk about it,” and then the feelings got so strong the tension became “just undeniable.” The on my knees image hits completely different knowing it’s a real memory.
The bridge is where it starts to crack open. “Lately you’ve been sending texts in the morning / call me crazy but I think that we’re more than friends / you got me in too deep mentally / I’m losing sleep.” Morning texts are the whole damn game. Nobody sends morning texts to someone they’re not thinking about the second they wake up. Olivia knows it, and the “call me crazy” is her giving her an out she hopes he won’t take. “You got me in too deep mentally” is the admission that this has moved way past physical attraction into the territory where you’re building a whole life with someone in your head before they’ve confirmed they’re interested.

See, the chorus keeps coming back to the same question. “All mine / everything falls in line / should I ignore these signs / don’t really wanna waste my time / be by my side / oh baby I need you right here / oh baby you have no idea idea idea.” “You have no idea” is the whole damn song in four words. She has no idea what she does to her, what she’s been sitting with, how completely gone she already is. The repetition of “idea idea idea” fading out is her running out of ways to contain it.
The outro drops all the pretense completely. “Will you come back to me / I promise it’ll last baby / it’s not a one night thing / I know you need time to think / but I’m still on my knees begging you to change your mind.” She’s clarifying the terms because she needs her to understand this isn’t a casual ask. And then the last lines just gut you. “Please don’t make me do this without you / I don’t wanna need you but I do / baby I can’t do this without you.” “I don’t wanna need you but I do” is the most honest thing anyone has ever said about this feeling. The wanting that arrived before you consented to it. That’s the fucking line.
My main guy eventually stopped pretending too. Took about eleven months of “just friends” energy before one of us finally said something out loud, and I’m not going to tell you which one cracked first. What I’ll tell you is that the moment it happened everything that had been vibrating just below the surface finally had somewhere to go and it was worth every fucking second of the excruciating in-between. Olivia Ryan wrote a whole song about that in-between and she nailed it. Her fiancée is lucky. Full stop.
