Olivia Brown has released a new single called “is it a sign?”, her second collaboration with producer ceecide following “drowning.” Released July 31, the song slides through Brown’s dreamy electronica lane while she tries to figure out whether the universe is sending her divine guidance or she is desperately refreshing her emotional horoscope until it finally says, “Dump his ass.”

Brown captures that shitty final stretch of a relationship where two people still share history, yet their lives keep heading in separate directions. The “threads” remain tangled because feelings rarely disappear on schedule, but she is exhausted from waiting for their paths to cross again. Her interest and resolve are fading, and she wants some celestial bitch with a clipboard to officially declare the relationship dead so she can leave without second-guessing herself.
Then the rain soaks her feet and the cold climbs into her lungs making every miserable inconvenience feel like Goddess personally sliding a breakup notice under her door. The amoxicillin detail makes the whole thing wonderfully specific because this woman is sick and freezing, and apparently still expected to decode the romantic intentions of the universe. And this is so relatable! Midway through my sophomore year I had a devastating breakup on top of walking pneumonia and literally dropped out of college for half a year – a period that actually feels heaven-sent in hindsight because it gave me a chance to reset. If your relationship has you treating a respiratory infection as divine intervention, babe, the fucking sign has arrived.
The real turn comes when “Is it a sign from up above?” becomes “’Cause it’s a sign from up above.” Brown quits asking and starts telling herself what she already knows. By “Follow the sign from up above,” fate has become the spiritual backup she needs to finally “give up on us.” Sometimes destiny is simply the pretty name we give a decision after we are too fucking tired to keep pretending we haven’t made it.

Chicago-based electronic artist Olivia Brown has been turning heartbreak into corrupted files since 2024, drifting between glitch-pop and dream pop while treating emotional damage as something she can drag into the trash and delete with one satisfying little click. Her 2025 EP man rm -ir made that impulse literal, feeding old pain into broken rhythms while her voice drifted through the wreckage, and her collaborations with ceecide have since produced “drowning” and “is it a sign?” Her collaborator in this delicious digital mess is Jonathan Martinez, the South Texas multi-instrumentalist behind ceecide, who layers blown-out guitar over scuffed electronic production then sends enough bass through the walls to piss off the neighbors. He calls the result “hyperrock,” which fits music that refuses to pick a lane or behave its ass. His breakout 2020 project HUMANBEING set delicate piano against circuitry that sounded ready to short out, while his upcoming album let me float here forever lets shoegaze swallow more of the room under the influence of My Bloody Valentine and Lantlôs. Martinez also founded the Ceecide Festival, a virtual underground showcase staged inside Minecraft and carried beyond the server through Discord and Twitch, because apparently a normal venue with warm beer and a sticky fucking floor was far too basic.
By the end of “is it a sign?”, Brown has done what every girl does after the group chat starts repeating itself: promoted a bad feeling to divine prophecy and called the case fucking closed. Her soaked shoes and chest infection already make the message pretty clear, so waiting for the heavens to send a personalized breakup memo would be a little dramatic even for me. Brown and ceecide understand the funniest part of begging for a sign: once we already know the answer, almost any miserable bullshit will qualify. The universe can keep its clouds and cryptic little mind games. When staying feels this awful, leaving is the sign.
