Neko Express’s ‘Unlucky’ Weaponizes Kawaii Culture into Something Filthy and Powerful

So someone called me kawaii a few weeks ago and I had to fucking Google it. Cute, but like… Japanese cute. Specific cute. And now I see it everywhere—on TikTok, in comment sections, girls using it to describe their whole aesthetic. Then neko express drops ‘Unlucky’ and suddenly I get it. Kawaii means weaponizing cute. Looking soft and whispery and sweet while you’re actually the one calling every single shot. neko express’s new track ‘Unlucky’ is what happens when that aesthetic stops apologizing and starts taking what it wants. I’ve had it on repeat for three days straight and I’m done pretending to be normal about it.

“I like my girls hot, almond milk, quarter sweet / I like lemon drop on your lips / Whipped cream on your cherries / Come on, play with me” – we’re maybe thirty seconds in and already this is not subtle. That coffee order specificity means someone who knows exactly what she wants and how she wants it. The lemon drops, the whipped cream—we’re in full dessert metaphor territory except we all know what’s actually happening here. Then that “come on, play with me” drops before the beat kicks in with “I’ll make you unlucky unlucky unlucky unlucky” and suddenly you realize the whole cute thing is a trap.

The production here is deceptively innocent. MIMI and zZz built these dreamy synths over four-on-the-floor house beats that hit you in the chest. The vocals stay breathy and soft like someone whispering in your ear at 3am even while the lyrics are explicitly about control, desire, someone becoming completely obsessed with you. Sounding sweet while saying filthy things.

“I like your skirt high on your waist, all see through / I like you handcuffed on my bed / Choker tight on your neck / Oh, boys craving you / I’ll make them unlucky unlucky unlucky unlucky” – High skirts, handcuffs, chokers tight enough to feel it—we’ve fully entered the explicit zone. And that line about boys craving you right before “I’ll make them unlucky”—that’s the whole power dynamic. She’s making everyone else irrelevant while she gets exactly what she wants.

The chorus hits with “You tell me fantasies / I’ll make you dream for more” and underneath there’s this ad-lib going “Baby girl I know you really want me” – it’s cocky as hell and completely earned. The repetition builds this hypnotic loop that never releases the tension, just keeps you wanting more. Then “Say you’re obsessed with me / I’m everything you want” with that parenthetical “(Yeah you think you really know about me)” taunting underneath—this is someone who knows exactly the effect they’re having and is fucking enjoying it.

When we get to “Ooh, and when you looked at me / Your eyes are full of tears / I think you’re so pretty” the vulnerability mixed with control—seeing someone completely undone and finding it beautiful—shifts the whole energy for a second. Then immediately following with “Just let me take control / You know you can’t break free / The demon inside you / It’s now all over me” – fuck. This is about the rush of power, of knowing someone can’t escape and loving that you’re the reason. The demon imagery represents something dark and edgy—that rush of control over someone’s desire feels fucking good.

That final chorus repetition with “And you still want more, more / (Baby girl I wanna touch your body)” – we’ve gone from playful to explicit to completely consumed. The track never gets aggressive or harsh. It stays in that breathy, almost innocent-sounding space while singing about handcuffs, control, obsession. The softness of the sound against the filth of the words—that’s the whole fucking point.

What neko express nailed here is that specific intersection of cute and commanding. The kawaii aesthetic as a weapon. Looking soft and approachable while being explicit about female desire, about wanting someone to be obsessed, about enjoying the power of control. This isn’t toned down or made palatable. “I like you handcuffed on my bed” doesn’t leave room for interpretation.

The house grooves keep your body moving while those synths and breathy vocals create this intimate, almost vulnerable feeling—except there’s nothing vulnerable about the lyrics. It’s public dance floor energy mixed with bedroom intimacy, and that combination is what makes it so goddamn effective. You could play this at a club or at 3am in someone’s apartment and it works either way.

Stream ‘Unlucky’ when you’re feeling powerful and want everyone to know it. This is for getting ready with intention, softly torturing the one tethered to your bed, or any moment when you need a reminder that being soft doesn’t mean giving up control. neko express just made the cutest, filthiest, most hypnotic track of the season and we’re all better for it.
