I ran into my ex at a gas station yesterday. I was wearing a grey hoodie way to big for me I’d just stolen with a coffee stain shaped like Florida, yesterday’s smudged eyeliner had migrated to my cheekbones, and I’d genuinely forgotten to brush my hair before leaving some guy’s apartment that morning. He was in his work clothes probably on his way to a meeting that mattered. He looked at me the way you look at a car accident and asked if I was doing okay. I smiled and told him I’ve never been better but he clearly didn’t believe me because I looked like I’d completely unraveled. The thing is I wasn’t lying. My life always looks like chaos at 8am but I’m happier than I’ve ever been. When Mystery Friends sing ” I’ve got nothing together / and babe I’ve never been better “ on “Never Been Better” yeah I get it.
Mystery Friends sits somewhere between Talking Heads and Dua Lipa making fresh synth-pop that feels like it’s been missing from your life. They call themselves “moderately danceable” which is bullshit because “Never Been Better” makes sitting still physically impossible. Abby Sevcik’s vocals soar over pulsing synths and disco beats, with production from Jordan Lawlor of M83 that sounds expensive as hell. The title promises clarity but delivers something better: permission to be a fucking mess and love it.

The track opens with pure nostalgia therapy. ” Backyard laying on a trampoline / pretend it’s summertime pretend I’m seventeen. “ That’s the fantasy right? Going back to when life was simpler and your biggest problem was boredom. But then Abby hits you with “Catching light just like I’m tourmaline / dip in the sweet chlorine, my hair is turning green” and holy shit, suddenly you’re not escaping to the past. You’re romanticizing the present. Your hair is turning green from too much pool time and that’s not a problem, that’s summer winning.
Then comes the thesis statement of the entire fucking song. ” Life got in the way of life going my way / but life has a funny way of going on anyway. “ God. Every twenty-something who thought they’d have their shit together by now just felt that. You had plans and life said no so you’re doing it anyway. The chorus is goddamn vindication: “So hang on to your letter / ’cause babe I’ve never been better / I’ve got nothing together / and babe I’ve never been better.” You hang on to your letter. Maybe it’s a resignation letter or breakup text you never sent. It could the plan you wrote at seventeen. You keep it as proof of where you thought you’d be, because where you actually are? It’s better. You’ve got nothing together. That’s freedom.
The second verse is where Mystery Friends gets really fun with it. ” Flat road driving down at fifty-five / the sunroof’s open wide / and you can see for miles. “ You’re not speeding toward anything, you’re cruising and taking your time. The view is good from here. Then ” Soft serve all over my brand new tee / you would have laughed at me / it doesn’t bother me “ and that’s the whole fucking vibe. You ruined your new shirt and someone would’ve judged you for it but you genuinely don’t care. That’s growth.

Abby addresses the self-awareness directly. ” I know it sounds cliche / but I say it anyway. “ Yeah we’ve all heard “everything happens for a reason” and “good vibes only” until we wanted to scream. This isn’t that. This is “On any given day / I think I’m gonna be ok” which is way more honest than any toxic positivity bullshit. That’s real optimism, the messy kind that actually holds up.
The production here is this funky-ass disco-tinged synth-pop that makes you move while you’re processing. Jordan Lawlor built something that sounds like a party even when the lyrics are admitting you’re kind of a disaster. Abby’s vocals float over the top with this effortless confidence that matches the message perfectly. She sounds fine because she is.
I actually am doing better than I’ve ever been, by the way. The ex was genuinely confused because he forgot I’m perfectly happy being the girl who leaves a guy’s place with his hoodie before sunrise with her heels in hand and last night’s underwear stuffed in her purse. I’m not where I planned to be but I’m somewhere better. Sometimes the best version of your life doesn’t look Instagram-ready. Sometimes it looks like soft serve on your new shirt and green hair and driving fifty-five while everyone else rushes past. Mystery Friends made the anthem for everyone who’s figured out that “together” is overrated and “happy” looks different than you thought.
