Being famous already sounds exhausting because apparently everybody gets an opinion on your clothes and whoever the hell you’re sleeping with. Then imagine your boyfriend starts getting spotted around town with other women while you’re out doing shows and suddenly his wandering dick has become part of your public image. Miss Verona turns that nightmare into ‘Bad For My Reputation’, an alt-pop and indietronica scandal about a star who knows her cheating boyfriend is becoming a career problem and still cannot quite stop wanting the bastard. The electronic pulse keeps the humiliation playful while the attraction stays inconveniently hot. Having your manager scream about your empire while you’re still thinking about what his hands can do to you is a fucking terrible position, but at least it makes excellent pop.
She gives away the weakness early with “talk sweet / But you cheat like a habit / Every headline goes irrational / You say please and I lose it / Yeah you have me / And I let you / Mess up my whole life.” One soft word from the wrong man can apparently wipe every red flag off the whiteboard especially when he knows how close to stand while he says it. She understands the pattern and still lets the chemistry win, which is the sexy little disaster at the center of the song. I have watched otherwise intelligent women catch a man fucking around on Friday and let one well-timed ‘please’ put him back in their bed by Saturday. Fine, bitch, put the phone on Do Not Disturb and make him earn the fucking relapse.

Then the chorus tells us why the manager is probably stress-eating in a parking garage. “You are bad for my reputation / Good for your imagination / I can’t keep my concentration / When your hands are in rotation.” Whatever happens once they are alone is strong enough to knock the celebrity brain offline, and she sounds far too entertained by that problem to pretend she wants a cure. I love the idea of a woman with an empire temporarily forgetting her own damn name because somebody knows what to do with her body. That is terrible crisis management and excellent fucking chemistry.
She goes from scandalized girlfriend to delightfully unhinged when she sings “If I can’t have you forever / Nobody else should have you too.” That is jealousy after the nice-girl filter has completely fallen off. He has already embarrassed her in public, and instead of imagining some graceful breakup she starts fantasizing about making sure nobody else gets the man she still wants. The possessiveness is fucked up, which is why the joke works so well. She knows the thought is insane and seems almost entertained by how far her brain is willing to take it. Then she quits flirting around the idea completely with “Many times I see me killing you / And yea, every time I kinda like it.” Now the revenge fantasy has become something she actively enjoys replaying, and the video pushes that dark little joke further by having her imagine different ways to finish him off. My revenge budget tops out at changing the passwords and buying a better dress, because prison orange would look like shit on me.

Miss Verona is a Los Angeles-based performer and songwriter with more than two decades onstage. She began singing at four and was performing abroad by eleven, which makes my childhood résumé of school choir and lying about practicing piano feel aggressively underqualified. Her career eventually took her through international stage productions, and she recently completed writing her debut album in Los Angeles. That long performance history explains the theatrical streak in ‘Bad For My Reputation’. She knows how to sell a raised eyebrow as part of the plot.
Somewhere around the final chorus I accept that attraction can survive information that should have killed it on arrival. She keeps the scandal playful enough to dance through while her heroine toggles between wanting him in her bed and imagining him in a crime scene. The whole shit is funny because she knows how ridiculous the contradiction is and she lets herself enjoy the fantasy while keeping him firmly in terrible-boyfriend territory. My friends would hate him and the screenshots would be organized by breakfast but unfortunately if he can wreck my concentration this badly I may need one final terrible night before we start the fucking reputation repair.
