I wore a black slip dress to a party last summer because I knew what it did to a room, and I was in the mood to enjoy every fucking second of that. Men looked. One eventually wandered over with the confidence of someone who had mistaken eye contact for paperwork already filed in his favor, and I let him flirt because he was hot enough to entertain me for a while. The funny part was watching him slowly realize that I could enjoy the attention without owing him the ending he had written in his head. I wanted the stare, and I wanted the choice of where it stopped. That particular thrill is all over Michele Braid Topcu’s Miss Grey, a song built around a woman who understands how much power there is in being desired when you’re the one controlling the temperature.
Michele calls it dark orchestral pop with a burlesque pulse, and thank fuck she lets the thing move slowly. The track stalks forward while the strings make the room feel expensive and a little dangerous, with her voice staying close, like she is leaning into your ear instead of singing across a stage, then widening when she wants the drama. Michele has described this world as “slightly unwell,” which works because a perfectly stable seduction sounds boring as hell and Miss Grey is much more fun when it feels one bad decision away from getting somebody’s stockings torn.

The line I keep hearing clearest is “Give me the keys. I’ll show you the way.” She already sounds like she has decided where the night is going. Then comes “Get on your knees. Show me.” and suddenly I am picturing some gorgeous idiot on the floor looking thrilled about his life choices. She can tease all night, but when she finally tells him what she wants, she does it with the calm of a woman who expects obedience. That is hot as fuck, and if she is going to keep somebody waiting this long, kneeling seems like fair compensation.
Michele built Miss Grey around a woman who can submit one minute and dominate the next which makes sense to me in a very personal way. I can want a man on his knees at midnight with pretty pink welts on his back courtesy of my old equestrian crop and curl into him at two in the morning and, yes, those versions belong to the same woman. Sex gets a lot more fun when you stop acting like one appetite cancels another. Miss Grey wants the heels and the leather while keeping the right to change the fucking game halfway through it. I know that woman because I am her.

Michele Braid Topcu spent years in spaces where bodies do part of the talking, first as part of German dance group Fragma and later as a professional dancer who eventually became head showgirl at Paris’ Pink Paradise. That history matters because a head showgirl knows what a pause can do to an audience and how long to hold a hip before people start losing their shit. That kind of work teaches timing with the whole body, so of course she knows how to make a three-minute song feel like somebody just loosened a corset one hook at a time.
She also makes visual art and photography, and Miss Grey feels dressed before she even opens her mouth. Madonna understood that trick years ago when she slipped into Mistress Dita for 1992’s controversial Erotica era, although Dita came at the fantasy from the dominatrix side while Miss Grey is much happier switching. I like alter egos for the same reason lingerie works for me because sometimes putting something on lets another part of you come out. I’ve had outfits that changed my posture and made me say things sweatpants never inspire, and a new name can do the same thing. Miss Grey gives Michele’s darker, hornier side its own room, while the slightly unwell streak puts a filthy little crack through the glamour.
I still own that black slip dress and the next time I wear it Miss Grey belongs on the getting-ready playlist. If some man mistakes the look for a promise again, he can flirt and stare, and I might even let him get cocky for a while because watching that confidence melt is half the fun. If the night gets interesting enough, serving me becomes practical advice, and he can deal with the fucking consequences and maybe go home with lipstick somewhere it did not start. That sounds like a much better use of the dress.
