LACES Delivers a Joyous, Wine-Drenched Goodbye to 9-5 in ‘I Quit for Summer.’

I’ve fantasized about quitting my job in dramatic fashion more times than I can count—usually around 3 p.m., wine-deprived and soul-dead at my desk. LACES gets it. Her new single “I Quit for Summer” is for every girl who’s ever hit her limit, slammed the laptop shut, and thought, fuck this, I’m choosing joy.

The second it hit, I felt it. It’s that moment where rebellion tastes like SPF and freedom smells like pool chlorine and tequila. It has Office Space energy, and yes, I mean that Office Space scene—smashed printers and all. LACES (aka Jessica Vaughn) turns corporate burnout into something danceable, giving us a song that struts out of the office with both middle fingers up. She starts in the spiral: “I better end it ‘cause I’m driving myself crazy / Been throwing blows out like a bitter, bitter baby.” Like—tell me you’ve never screamed in your car before a Monday morning meeting. I’ve definitely given strangers at red lights more than one concerned glance. But this isn’t just a tantrum. It’s the final straw.

“Think I’m gonna waste away / I don’t want to work all day.” I screamed. She’s not glamorizing quitting—she’s calling out the absurdity of clinging to routines that drain the life out of us. “Living for the weekend ain’t living at all / Every clock is ticking and I’m reaching last call.” Baby, I feel that shit in my bones.

LACES I Quit for the Summer

Produced by fellow queer artist Dresage (Keeley Bumford), “I Quit for Summer” lives in that perfect sonic space between catharsis and camp. It’s a glitter bomb with teeth—sun-drenched melodies hiding razor-sharp lyrics. You’re dancing, sure, but you’re also mentally drafting your resignation email. Mine just says “bye bitch” and a string of margarita emojis.

But here’s the thing—Jessica Vaughn isn’t new to this. This isn’t her first sonic rodeo. You might remember her as Charlotte Sometimes (yes, The Voice Charlotte), or you’ve probably heard her songs soundtracking your favorite messy TV dramas—Grey’s Anatomy, Lucifer, Good Trouble. Her work with Hasbro’s Jem & the Holograms and Equestria Girls proves she can flip from alt-pop to sync queen without breaking a sweat. She’s also been one of Billboard’s Top Queer Music Executives, and #7 in syncs back in 2021.

And all of that shows here. “I Quit for Summer” is a vibe as much as it is a statement. It’s Vaughn’s way of saying we deserve more than just surviving. This track is the last single before her WORK EP drops in June, and if this is the mood she’s bringing? I’m already pre-saving, pre-gaming, and pre-quitting.

And babe, I haven’t even mentioned that outro yet—“Hey, it’s me—I can’t come to the office today. Or tomorrow. Or ever.” I fucking cackled. Add it to your out-of-office auto-reply immediately.

Jessica said it best: “The only thing I know is, I’m choosing joy—if I can ever find the time to quit.” Same, girl. Same. Pass the wine.
