Kathy Katouzi’s ‘v@nish’ Is What Burnout Sounds Like in Hyperpop Form

I had this moment last winter where I was running on four hours of sleep and a deadline I’d already missed twice. My brain felt like a browser with forty tabs open and zero RAM left. I remember sitting at my laptop at 2am staring at a blank screen, thinking I wanted to just evaporate for a while, put me in a goddamn drawer for seventy-two hours and call me when it’s over. I’d been grinding so hard for so long that I’d completely lost the thread of why I was doing any of it. The work I used to love started feeling like a second job I never signed up for, and I was so fucking frustrated in a way I couldn’t explain to anyone because on paper everything looked fine. That’s the hell of real burnout. It doesn’t look like anything from the outside. That’s the feeling Kathy Katouzi is living in on ‘v@nish,’ and she made it sound like a damn fever dream you can’t stop replaying.

She said it better than I ever could.

This is burnout in hyperpop form and honestly it slaps harder than it should. Kathy told us “v@nish is the first song I wrote after six months of feeling completely disconnected from my music. I was juggling two jobs, school, and constant production, barely sleeping, always working until I lost sight of why I even started. Music was my escape, but it stopped feeling like one.” The chaos in the production isn’t an accident. The Y2K maximalism, loud and overwhelming and kind of unhinged, is the whole fucking point. It mirrors the burnout. It mirrors hyperpop. It mirrors what it feels like when your brain is so full it starts begging to just disappear for a minute. And that line “maybe you can help me vanish”? Not about a guy. About the industry itself. Which is somehow so much more devastating.

The woman behind all of this is doing it completely solo, and that shit should embarrass a lot of people with way more resources.

Kathy Katouzi is a Toronto-based indie pop artist and self-taught producer who’s been doing the whole damn thing herself from day one, no label handholding and no co-sign required. Born in Iran in 2006 and raised in a country where women weren’t exactly handed a microphone and told to go wild, she moved to Canada and basically said fuck that noise, I’m making art on my own terms. It’s a fully self-produced operation, which is honestly insane for someone her age and should embarrass a lot of people who’ve had way more resources and way less output. Her sound sits somewhere in the hyperpop-adjacent alt-pop lane with maximalist production and layered chaos and she’s been racking up press and playlist love since her first proper breakout run in 2024 with singles like “AFTERPARTY!,” “FLATL!NE,” and “OHNO!” Her debut EP I AM dropped June 2025, and the whole project is basically a love letter to creative freedom from someone who had it taken from her before she ever got to use it.

I got through that winter. Slept for twelve hours straight one Saturday and woke up feeling human again. But I keep coming back to ‘v@nish’ because it gets something right about that season that most songs completely miss. Burnout isn’t glamorous. It’s this slow drain where the thing you love most starts feeling like a stranger, and most people won’t admit that out loud. Kathy put it on a track and made it go hard as hell. For someone who almost vanished from her own music, she came back with something that’ll stick around for a long ass time.

Kathy Katouzi's 'v@nish' is burnout in hyperpop form and it goes harder than it should. Y2K maximalism, chaos production, and a line about wanting to disappear that you feel in your bones. This one's staying in rotation.
