I was three drinks in at my friend’s place last month when someone dimmed the lights and put this on and I just stopped mid-sentence. Those opening synths pressed into the room and I felt it immediately. I’ve been with someone who kept pushing me to my limit and then looked confused when I finally pushed back. The audacity of that. ‘Battlefront’ is the sonic version of finally being done with that shit. German producer Michel Jaensch built a dark-pop world around her voice that is so damn cinematic it just grabs your ass and squeezes. I stood there with my glass halfway to my mouth for two full minutes. My friend asked if I was okay. I was not.
The song opens on ” You wanna, you wanna, you wanna leave, you wanna leave / I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna cleave, I wanna cleave “ and honestly the repetition makes me feel slightly unhinged. That’s 3am brain – the same sentence cycling through your head while you’re staring at the ceiling. Cleave means she wants to hold on and that’s the whole damn problem right there in one word. She knows she should go and she’s still reaching for him anyway. Then she drops “Guess I lost, ’cause I grieve / Can you feel it? / My pain goes well with the beat / Your pain is on the upbeat” and I had to sit with that for a second. She’s mapping their pain against each other on a musical timeline and hers is carrying the whole damn weight while his just floats above it. The production under these lines is heavy and dark and Jex sounds like she’s barely raising her voice, and you just lean in harder because of it.

Then she asks “Think that you conquered me / Precisely what part of me? / I’m both the beauty / And the beast” and I felt that shit personally. Someone deciding they’ve got you figured out is one of the most insufferable things a person can do to you. She just looks at him and asks the question she already knows the answer to. That lyric deserves a cigarette and a standing ovation.
Okay the verse that made me actually put my drink down: “The bomb that you said I am / Why’s it surprising, then / If I exploded when / You stepped all over me.” I once had someone in my life who kept poking at me and then acted wounded every single time I reacted. You don’t get to create the conditions and then act confused about the outcome. Jex says this so calmly over this gorgeous swelling production and that contrast is messing with me in the best fucking way. Michel Jaensch is building this cinematic pressure around her and she’s just standing in the middle of it completely unbothered.
The chorus is where the whole track opens up and it’s so fucking satisfying. ” Cause I ain’t scared to front / But hey you’re gone / Then I’ll fight on my own / I’ll be in the battlefront / Trynna play me but no blood on the floor. “ She fought and she’s still standing and there’s nothing dramatic about the way she says it, it’s just a fact. That restraint is what makes this track seductive as hell.
The second verse gives you the same question with one word swapped and it reads completely differently. “You think that you conquered me / Precisely what part of me? / I’m both the hunter / and the beast.” Beauty becomes hunter. She’s not waiting anymore. Then the bridge comes in and it’s devastating: “Stole my heart / Just to claim your power / Brought your dark / Just to claim it ours / Love of hours / ‘Cause yours don’t last / It’s already sour.” He was borrowing the feeling. Running up a tab he never intended to pay. “It’s already sour” is the last word in a fight you finally stopped having and it feels so damn good to say it.

Jex Ayla is from Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland which already tells you something because that region is this wild cultural crossroads and she draws from her Assyrian heritage on top of that. Her influences are P!nk and Meg Myers, women who take emotional truth and set it on fire without blinking, and you can hear that in every choice she makes on this track. ‘Battlefront’ is her collaboration with German producer Michel Jaensch and between the two of them they built something that sounds urgent as hell and completely real.
The outro pulls everything back. “Stay, stay and fight / You said you’d try / Was it all white lies? / This, this was no battlefield / ‘Cause now I’m the one / Left to confront.” He called it a battlefield. Gave it all this weight and drama and then just left. She’s the one still standing in it and she’s not waiting for him to come back and finish what he started.
So I’m thinking back to that night I first heard this track. When it ended, no one said anything for a second. Then my friend looked at me and went “who the hell hurt you” and I just started laughing because honestly? Same, girl. Same. I texted the link to two people without context and they both responded within minutes losing their shit. That’s what Jex Ayla’s ‘Battlefront’ does. It finds the nerve, presses on it, and somehow makes you feel powerful about the whole damn thing instead of wrecked by it.
