Hana Lili Drags a Cheater Into the Light With ‘Ur Girlfriend’s a Lawyer’

If you were the main character in this song you’d get real fucking tired of being the secret no matter how much you thought you loved the asshole. The dirty little footnote in someone else’s clean story. His girlfriend works late. She’s a lawyer with her own apartment in the city and got her shit together. Meanwhile he’s in your bed acting like the hours don’t exist. Like you’re supposed to keep your fucking mouth shut and let him have both. You’re watching him parade her around while he’s still fucking you on the side. He wanted both and thought you’d stay quiet about it. Thought you’d be his goddamn alibi forever. You’d totally burn that whole situationship down. Hana Lili did.

‘Ur Girlfriend’s a Lawyer’ is pop-punk with teeth. Razor-sharp guitars that don’t ask permission. The production hits fast and doesn’t let up. This is what it sounds like when you’re done being someone’s goddamn alibi. I heard your girlfriend’s a lawyer / I bet she works in the city / It’s cool she owns an apartment / But I know nobody sees it how I see. She’s laying it out cold. His girlfriend is successful, put-together, probably thinks she’s got a good one. She doesn’t. He’s loud around her to cover up what he’s doing behind her back. You’re watching him perform boyfriend while he’s still fucking you on the side. That all the late nights / No, it doesn’t add up / And you talk loud / Just to cover it up / I guess it’s my fault / That it wasn’t enough. That line gets me. The way she throws “I guess it’s my fault” in there, dripping with the exact opposite of an apology. She knows whose fault it actually is. He wanted both and thought she’d stay quiet about it.

Hana Lili is a rock pop artist, songwriter, and producer from Wales who spent last year opening for Coldplay and Circa Waves before running her own headline tour. Now she’s back with ‘Sick of Myself.’ She grew up on Deftones, Nirvana, Pixies, No Doubt (before Gwen went full MAGA.) The shit that actually scared people. Her lyrics are whatever’s screaming in her head with no filter and no fucking apology. When she’s not kicking ass on a stage, you’ll find her in a mosh pit or playing riffs in her bedroom. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

The chorus punches. Go where you want me to go, I’ll fake it / Say what you want me to say, that’s two-faced / Go lie in the bed you’re making / Call it what you wanna / But, oh god, if she doesn’t know what I know / I’m gonna tell her. There it is. The threat and the promise. You played stupid games, you’re about to choke on the prize. She’s not keeping his secret anymore. “‘Ur Girlfriend’s a Lawyer’ is a song about this guy who had a girlfriend, but he was overstepping the line of boundaries,” Hana said. “I wrote this song a while after the situation happened, and I think as time went on, I just thought more about the situation and the girlfriend involved… and you kind of realise how much of an idiot he was. I wanted the song to be full of energy and unforgiving.” Full of energy. Unforgiving. Yeah, she fucking nailed that.

You made a mess out of my mind / It’s not that hard to be honest / And, oh, I hate how you talk so loud / That way I know that she’ll never notice. He gets loud on purpose. Covers his tracks with volume. Acts like everything’s fine while he’s splitting his time between two people who both deserve better than his spineless bullshit. I don’t wanna be your alibi / Cover it up and pretend it’s fine / You already know / You can’t have what you want if you got what you wanted. That last line lands hard. You wanted both. You got both. Now deal with what comes after.

“It’s like I envision them listening to this song,” Hana explained. “And if she knows everything, then they’re in her apartment, laughing over how silly it all is, thinking it’s silly I ever wrote a song about it. But if she doesn’t know, I guess it’s my way of being like, hey… you should tell her.”

The guitars on this track are vicious. Pop-punk that doesn’t soften itself for radio. The whole thing refuses to be polite about what it’s saying. He’s an asshole who made a mess. She’s making sure everyone sees it.

If this were me, I’d stop being the secret the second I realized keeping quiet only protected him. I’m not saying I wouldn’t lose myself for a minute staying quiet or pretending it was fucking fine while he got everything he wanted and I got whatever shit he had left over. But I’d wise up fast. Hana Lili wrote a song that says the same damn thing. Let him lie in the bed he made. Call it whatever the fuck he wants. Just don’t call it love when it was always just him being too much of a coward to pick one.
