I went almost two months being good, not texting anyone I shouldn’t, keeping my ass out of situations that have historically wrecked me, and then one night the little devil on my shoulder got louder and suddenly being good felt completely fucking pointless. So I was driving back from a lame marketing seminar still miles from home and feeling the kind of restless that only one thing fixes. I stopped for a drink because why not, and somewhere around drink four the restless got louder than my better judgment. I have a guy for that. Had. Have. The line is blurry when the liquor’s involved, and he lived in that town because of course he did. Too tipsy to drive, I got a hotel room and sent him the address. He was there in an hour. The emptiness was filled shortly thereafter. Gen’s ‘Void’ is that night set to the darkest most seductive R&B you’ve heard all year, and she understands the assignment completely.
Gen is a Montreal-based recording artist and producer doing everything on her own terms. She takes an underground approach to sonic world-building and the storytelling is all her own. Blending dark R&B, alt-pop and ambient textures, she calls it “Scorpio Music” and honestly that’s the most accurate genre description I’ve ever heard. ‘Void’ is where it all crystallizes.

She opens with “Hit up your phone / Off the 42 feeling loose / Telling you I’m alone / You ask me where I’ve been / Off the grid.” She’s been out on the road doing her thing and the looseness of the night has worn down whatever wall she built between herself and this phone call. “I’m alone” is the one line that tells him to hurry up and bring his A-game.
Then she owns it completely. “Yeah I know I’m a ghost / Probably did you wrong a hundred times / But I’m wanting you close / Cause if I’m being honest / Boy you fill the / Void.” Damn. She spent one line on the apology and the rest on the ask. She ghosted him and she’s owning it the way you own a parking ticket before throwing it in the glove compartment and driving away. What she’s actually saying is that he fills her in a way nobody else does, and I mean that in every sense of the word. She wants him in her space and in her body and the two things are completely inseparable at this point in the night.

The second verse is where the heat lives and she absolutely goes there. “Let’s cut all the talking yeah the chit chat / Cause baby let’s be honest we don’t need that / I know the liquor’s talking but it’s all facts / Cause I’m just being honest yeah I need that / Cause you fill the / Void.” She’s not interested in relitigating any of it. She wants him to get his ass there and fill the void the only way that works, which is her on her back with him deep inside her until that fucking void is filled. The liquor just made her stop pretending she didn’t need it. That’s the confession hiding inside the hook. She’s been needing this the whole time she was ghosting him, and the honesty of that is almost ruthless. She knows she’s using him. No shits given.
Gen built ‘Void’ around that word for a reason. The void is in the production itself, that low dark sound that feels like 2am with nowhere to be, and in the way her vocal sits close and a little desperate without ever losing its cool. She’s stating facts. He fills her up in a way that nothing else does, and the liquor just made her honest enough to say it out loud. That specific hunger lives underneath all your responsible decisions until four drinks strip them away and what’s left is just the wanting. Raw and inconvenient.
The night I texted my guy, he showed up and we didn’t say anything. His hands and my body did the talking. Afterward I lay there thinking I should probably feel some kind of way about how easy that was, how fast the void closed. I didn’t though. Gen gets it. The void gets louder until you do something about it. Full stop.
