So my ex texted last night. Again. Midnight, of course—they always text at midnight. I’m staring at “hey” on my screen and thinking what the fuck?? He does this every few weeks—texts like nothing happened, tells his friends I’m crazy, then acts shocked when I bring up the fact that he broke up with me twice in one month.
Emma Teufel’s “Heartbreak Szn” came on shuffle this morning. I wish I’d had this song six months ago. Hell, I wish I’d had it every time I almost texted back. It’s this electro-pop track that’s somehow both a celebration and a middle finger—catchy enough that I’ve already played it five times today, pointed enough that it nails exactly what happens when someone refuses to get over you while dating other people. Teufel (pronounced like “joyful,” yeah, and it means devil in German) just started releasing under her own name, and if this is the vibe, I’m fucking here for it.
This sounds expensive. Glossy 2000s production, the kind where every layer is doing something. Internal rhymes hit fast enough that you’re already mouthing along before the first chorus ends. The melody won’t leave—I’ve been stuck on it since 9am.

She opens calling him out for what he’s doing to his new girlfriend – pretending he’s moved on when he clearly hasn’t. Then the kicker: he’s telling this new girl everything about his ex, playing the victim. I’ve been the ex in this scenario. It’s fucking exhausting.
The pre-chorus breaks down his pattern. Pictures popping up, old songs on repeat, bitterness showing through. “Maybe you should take some time to breathe / ‘Cuz you’re two weeks in and still thinking of me.” TWO WEEKS. He jumped into something new and he’s already posting throwback photos.
“So miss me, miss me in the rearview / Don’t call begging like I need new reasons / It’s heartbreak season.” She’s telling him to miss her in the rearview—keep it in the past, stop calling with excuses about why he needs to talk. She’s done with it.
Second verse asks what we’ve all wanted to ask an ex who won’t let go. He’s calling constantly, telling her his new girlfriend is overrated. Then she hits him with the truth: he keeps changing his mind, thinks the grass is greener somewhere else, but really it’s simple. He just won’t admit it.

“You say you’re apathetic / But my name’s on your tongue / On Monday, I’m the villain / By Friday, I’m the one.” This line. If you’ve dated someone who trash-talks you to their friends while texting you at 3am, you felt this. She tells him to stop lying and go mess with someone else.
The bridge paints what he’s picturing in his head—her out at some bar, surrounded by new faces, kissing other people. “I hate the bar, but love the people / So I’m kissing everyone that’s not you.” That detail makes it real. Then reality: he can’t stop thinking about her, wants it to stop but can’t let go. She’s exhausted from trying, from crying. Don’t come crawling back in a week. She cuts herself off and jumps back into the chorus.
Teufel took the most annoying part of dating, the ex who won’t move on but also won’t come back and made a track you actually want to play loud. I’ve been playing it in my car with the windows down. My neighbor definitely heard me singing along this morning. If you’ve ever been someone’s backup plan, or watched them ruin every new relationship by refusing to let go of you, this one’s gonna hit.
Look, if you’ve been in this cycle—and we’ve all been in some version of this cycle—you need this track. Not for crying, not for closure, just for that moment when you’re finally fucking done being someone’s maybe. The next time he texts let this play instead of responding. Trust me on this one.
