There is a deeply fucking unfair category of man who looks like maybe he’s had one cookie since last night’s soundcheck and somehow gets hotter the second he picks up a guitar, which is probably how you end up forgiving the hair obsession while mentally calculating how fast you could get his shirt over his head. Ellijai turns that particular weakness into ‘Skinny Boyfriend’, a high-energy alt-rock rush about the lanky little menace who barely has to try before your standards start getting negotiable. Ewan Macfarlane’s production pushes sharp guitars against driving synths, giving Ellijai plenty of noise to throw herself into while the chorus feels built for screaming along once he has already kissed half your lipstick off. The real trouble is that innocent little act, because this skinny menace clearly knows one look is enough to have her ready to drop her panties. I have dated enough musicians to know the guitar is eventually going to become a third person in the relationship, but unfortunately some men look awesome holding one.

The attraction is gloriously immediate when Ellijai sings “Oh I think he knows how far it goes / I know he knows one look from him and I’d be tearing off his clothes.” The fantasy has already moved way past conversation and the sexiest part is his awareness of the effect he has on her. He knows what that look does and keeps feeding it because confidence becomes dangerous as hell when the guy wearing it already knows you want him naked. Girl – a man who understands his own sex appeal can be exhausting but one who weaponizes it with a guitar is a fucking workplace hazard.
Their chemistry gets even better once it becomes clear he likes the trouble right back. “My skinny boyfriend he’s all bones and attitude / My skinny boyfriend loves that fact that I’m no good” gives us a guy who has no interest in sanding down the part of her that behaves badly around him. She likes his rock-star bullshit, he likes her black eyeliner and slutty little bad-girl streak, and honestly they sound like they are going to be a badass problem together.
The dirtiest line barely needs any help. “He’s got a sonic situation in his head / And I’m getting off on something he just said” tells me whatever came out of his mouth has already traveled considerably lower than her ears. He can turn her on before physical contact even enters the equation, which makes the mental part of this attraction nasty in the best possible way. I fucking appreciate a man who can cause problems with his mouth before he has even used it properly.

Ellijai Macfarlane started writing and recording songs at home when she was seven, then by thirteen she was already performing on Scottish stages including ButeFest and Òran Mór. Her debut single ‘Floating in the Flood’ arrived in 2024 when she was fifteen, and BBC Introducing Scotland later named ‘Stupid Sometimes’ Track of the Week. She has since reached the final of the Scottish Live Music Awards’ Young Live Act of the Year category while building toward a debut album planned for summer 2027. That is one hell of a head start, and ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ sounds like the point where she lets the guitars get louder while the flirting gets considerably fucking dirtier.
By the time ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ is over, the only sensible fucking thing left to do is put the guitar somewhere safe and find out whether all that attitude still works with his jeans off. ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ understands the appeal is partly the chaos, especially when he is cool enough to make bad judgment feel like excellent chemistry. If he insists on taking the guitar to bed, fine. I’ll put the guitar on one side of me and him on the other, and he can figure out which one he wants to play first.
