I had a boyfriend whose mother made me watch every fucking word around her. Everything got the little judgmental look. Say the wrong thing and you could practically hear the internal complaint being filed with Human Resources about the girl corrupting her darling boy. So I smiled. I behaved. I tiptoed around her moods while one extremely satisfying sentence stayed locked behind my teeth: Lady, I’m fucking your son and if you make him choose, you’re going to hate the answer. Ella Stae’s TIP TOE is for every woman who has ever kept the peace while mentally rehearsing the sentence that would fucking end it.
The hyperpop production brings light drum and bass into that tension, giving TIP TOE the restless energy of somebody monitoring the room for the next explosion. That makes sense for the fourth single from Ella’s Cruise Control EP, a project built around control and release. The track is supposed to feel as though one wrong move could set somebody off, and the pace keeps that anxiety moving underneath her. You know that feeling when somebody’s mood changes and suddenly your entire body knows before they’ve said a fucking word? That’s where this thing operates.

Ella starts with the power dynamic already established. “You tell me it’s my fault / make me feel small / push me around / when you feel down.” There’s the arrangement. This person feels shitty, so somehow everybody nearby gets assigned a role in the production. Ella gets blamed. Then she gives us “you’re a ticking bomb / and I tick you off,” which is such a good little turn because now she’s living beside the countdown while being told she caused it. I know this game. Somebody else loses their shit and somehow you end up reviewing your own behavior afterward.
Then Ella starts seeing through it. “think your tough / But I know you’re not,” lands differently from the woman being made to feel small a few lines earlier. She follows it with “I see right through / All of your cheap shots / I’ve had enough.” That last phrase matters because she repeats it. The woman tiptoeing has apparently started imagining what happens when she puts her whole fucking foot down.
The chorus gives the song its most recognizable behavior. “Try to be careful with my words / I gotta hush / tip tip tip / tip toe.” God, I know that fucking edit button. You start composing sentences for someone else’s temperament before they ever leave your mouth. Take that word out because she’ll hear attitude. Soften this one because he’ll take it wrong. Eventually you’re speaking in a language designed entirely around keeping another person calm while the uncensored version of you is in the back screaming say it, bitch!
That’s what makes “you do your best to make things worse / twisting your knife down where it hurts” hit harder. Ella has already figured out that all this careful behavior isn’t fixing anything. She can choose every word correctly and still end up dealing with the knife. Walking on eggshells starts feeling pretty fucking pointless once you realize the person scattering them enjoys watching you step carefully.

Verse two is where her patience starts packing its shit. “You tell me im too much,” she sings before getting to “When you’re around I tiptoe / dont understand why you switch up / like wtf / I’ve had enough.” I love the bluntness of “wtf” there. She has spent the song monitoring herself around somebody unpredictable, and now the internal monologue is getting considerably less polite. Fear has started giving way to anger. Good. Anger occasionally remembers where we left our fucking spine.
Ella Stae is a Norwegian singer-songwriter from Stavanger whose earlier work leaned toward bedroom pop before her catalog moved deeper into electronic territory. TIP TOE continues that direction as the fourth single from Cruise Control, with its hyperpop and light drum-and-bass framing giving her something sharper for a song about reaching the limit with somebody else’s volatility. The bigger shift here is inside the writing. Ella begins with someone making her small and ends up repeatedly telling us she has had enough. There’s your fucking cruise control switching off.
His mother never did find out what I was actually thinking while I smiled politely across the table. Probably for the best. The woman already thought I was corrupting her darling little boy. Finding out I’d had her supposedly virginal son tied to the bed while I mounted his face might have finished her off. Ella spends TIP TOE getting closer to saying the thing she’s been swallowing, and apparently I’ve been waiting years for the same opportunity. I’d love to say I wouldn’t rub it in. We both know I already did.
