Eden Mar’s ‘STUPID CRUSH’ Knows a Bad Crush Can Hijack Your Brain

Some crushes know how much attention to give you before pulling away and making you wonder what the fuck happened. I had one who could spend an entire night making me feel chosen, then go weirdly quiet the next day like we had shared a bus seat instead of enough chemistry to keep me awake until 3 a.m. The disappearing act worked because the attention always came back right before I got smart enough to detach. That little cycle will turn an otherwise functional woman into somebody checking her phone with the concentration of a bomb technician. Eden Mar catches that stupid little spiral on STUPID CRUSH, a song about wanting someone who keeps moving close enough to make the fantasy feel possible before backing away again. Your brain knows the pattern. Your crush apparently has other plans.

Eden drags STUPID CRUSH back toward the early 2000s with a bass line that has enough dirt on it to keep all this yearning from getting too cute. The track has enough grit to keep the sweetness from becoming sugary, while Eden’s delivery stays light enough to preserve the fun. That balance matters because getting led on can make you miserable, and Eden would rather let the frustration flirt a little.

Her first verse tells us why she is already screwed. “She’s a Libra / Thrifted jeans and a vibe like so nonchalant” sketches the kind of girl who looks effortless enough to make effort feel embarrassing. Eden responds with “Think I need to / Reframe my brain and figure out what I want,” which lasts roughly until the woman gives her another crumb of attention. Then “A-all about me / And then one day acts like I don’t exist at all” explains the whole fucking problem. She is getting enough interest to stay hopeful and enough distance to keep obsessing. That combination can make a crush feel chemically important long after common sense has left the building.

Eden finally says the quiet part out loud with “I think I wanna make her my girl,” and suddenly all that hot-and-cold bullshit has a face. She wants this girl badly enough to keep entertaining the mixed signals, which is how a crush gets promoted from cute distraction to unpaid second job. The chorus piles on with “Touch and go / Like one step forward and ten steps backwards / Take it slow / Stupid crush made me fall head first.” That ten-steps-backward exaggeration is painfully accurate. One hot little moment can somehow buy somebody another week of access to your nervous system.

The second verse gets messier because Eden starts seeing through some of the cool-girl presentation she was attracted to in the first place. “She does her makeup / Dressed to impress for anyone who might be passing by / Says its curation / But insecurity doesn’t lie.” Eden clocks the performance and the insecurity underneath it, which makes the whole crush feel a little more intimate. This girl suddenly has cracks in the image, and Eden is close enough to notice them. Then “She has a vision / And I do too I only wonder if they align” slips a serious thought into all the flirting. She can want the hell out of this girl and still wonder whether they are actually headed anywhere together. Crushes are very rude about making you consider logistics after they have already scrambled your brain.

San Antonio pop artist Eden Mar spent years making music before finally deciding the rest of us could hear it. Her songs tend to pull from the bruised parts of her history without turning every track into an emotional funeral. Her catalog already includes songs like wait, breakfast in bed and make me feel something (shameless), and STUPID CRUSH fits naturally beside them because Eden seems comfortable letting a feeling be embarrassing before she tries to make it pretty.

My own attention boomerang eventually came back one final time, and I had finally gotten bored enough to leave it on read. Eden is still a little earlier in the process on STUPID CRUSH. She is staring straight at the mixed signals and falling anyway because crushes are rude like that. The last line, “Stupid crush you make my head hurt,” says more than another verse probably could. Sometimes desire gives you butterflies. Sometimes it gives you a fucking migraine. This girl appears capable of both.

Eden Mar’s 'STUPID CRUSH' is for anyone who has ever gotten one hot little moment and somehow handed over another week of access to their nervous system. Mixed signals have never sounded this catchy.
