I have a toxic little weakness for people who make me feel wanted and confused at the same fucking time. Give me one long stare across a dance floor and suddenly I’m rewriting every warning sign into something sexier because apparently my libido deserves its own legal counsel. Dina Summer’s ‘Burning Heart’ understands that particular bad decision beautifully. This is attraction with an imbalance baked into it, the kind where I’m already mentally taking his shirt off while some quieter part of me is wondering why I’m the one doing all the reaching. Wanting somebody can make terrible math feel romantic as hell. Sometimes you know the equation is fucked and still want him to cross the room.

Dina Summer dress that tension in dark synth-pop that feels pulled from an ’80s club after midnight. The bassline keeps everything low and dirty while brighter synths flash around it, giving the track that gorgeous push-pull between danger and pleasure. There is enough Italo disco in the DNA to make my hips volunteer before my brain has finished reading the situation. Phoebe’s vocal would not belong here, obviously, and Dina P.’s delivery stays cool enough to make the yearning feel even hotter. She sounds like somebody trying very hard to keep her shit together while one person is making that increasingly difficult.
The first verse already has me picturing a room with terrible lighting and one person I absolutely should stop looking at. “Dust glows gold in a fading light / You come to me in the night / Your shadow stretches through the dark / I can’t resist your burning heart.” That last line is basically the whole problem. She knows this person has heat and keeps moving closer anyway. I know that move. Sometimes the guy most likely to fuck up your week also has the biggest bulge in his pants and apparently evolution forgot to protect us from that bullshit.
By the second verse, the chemistry gets physical enough that I can practically feel the air change. “Silver smoke on a dim-lit floor / You pull me in like you did before / Your quiet stare cuts through the dark / I’m all yours, you ignite my heart.” There is something filthy about a quiet stare when both people already know what it means. You can call it eye contact if you want. I call it foreplay with plausible deniability. Then she gets painfully direct with “I feel neglected / I am yearning / For your touch,” and suddenly all that cool nocturnal seduction has a crack running through it. She wants more from him than whatever hot little half-measure he keeps offering.

Dina Summer is the Berlin collaboration between Greek-German dark-disco duo Local Suicide and Bavarian producer Kalipo, who came out of electro-punk band Frittenbude. They started making music together in 2019 and built their sound around ’80s Italo disco and new wave with early-2000s electroclash running through the whole damn thing. That combination makes ‘Burning Heart’ feel very much like their natural habitat. The track comes from people who understand how to make longing feel glamorous enough that you almost forget somebody is getting emotionally shortchanged.
What gets me is how little mystery there is by the end. “Our fates align / Play your part / And cross the line.” She wants him to stop hovering in the doorway and fucking choose. I respect the clarity, even if the situation sounds like the kind of thing that would have me texting my best friend from a bathroom stall asking whether wanting him this badly counts as evidence. ‘Burning Heart’ lives in that dangerous little space where desire feels incredible and being underfed emotionally somehow makes you want one more bite. If he is going to keep staring like that, somebody better cross the goddamn line.
