Three a.m. in the back of an uber is where perfectly normal crushes start behaving like fucking life decisions. One minute I’m going home with a guy I like and five minutes later I’m mentally giving him a drawer because he smiled at me under the club lights. Alcohol lies beautifully at that hour, and early love makes the story even better. Every shitty backseat starts feeling cinematic when your serotonin is doing all the fucking thinking. Coral Palms catches that high on ‘Morning Lover,’ a bright indie-pop crush song about staying out until the night turns into morning and still wanting more.
Coral Palms gives the crush a sunny little engine, with guitar carrying most of the flirt while the rhythm keeps nudging the night forward. He built the track with Marco Viscito of RYP Recordings, and the chorus came first after a stretch of listening to Post Malone’s ‘What Don’t Belong To Me.’ That makes sense once the hook arrives because the melody is doing the seducing before the words have finished making their case. It is breezy as hell without sounding half-asleep, which works beautifully when the whole premise is two people refusing to call it a night.

The chemical part gets named early with “Serotonin running through my mind / I never want to lose the high.” That is the kind of shit your brain says when somebody has been cute for six hours and suddenly you are assigning cosmic meaning to their profile in dashboard light. Coral Palms knows he is completely gone here and seems pretty fucking happy about it, which keeps the sweetness from drifting into greeting-card territory.
Once the chorus opens up, the romance gets messier in a way I like more. “I walked into a storm with my heart uncovered / Drinking ‘till were Morning Lovers” makes falling for somebody sound reckless enough to be fun. Then “And a taxi ride where we backseat drive” drops the whole thing into that after-hours haze where nobody wants to be the responsible asshole who says the night is over. The song keeps moving while the two of them stay inside their little bubble, apparently determined to squeeze daylight out of the evening.

My favorite line is “Cause I love the way your disarray / Gives me every reason to stay.” That gives me much more to believe than all the stars and blue skies around it. He likes the mess. He sees the person slightly rumpled by the night and wants to stay close anyway. The next verse pushes the infatuation further with “It’s like you were written for my melody line,” which is cheesy in the way a crush gets to be cheesy when your judgment has already packed its bags and gone home.
Coral Palms originally formed as a London indie-pop band after a university project turned into something serious, with Foals and Two Door Cinema Club among the influences named in the group’s early bio. The current SubmitHub material frames ‘Morning Lover’ as an introduction to his upcoming project. Coral Palms describes the goal as something simple and uplifting that people would want to return to, and that tracks with a song this committed to keeping the serotonin flowing.
I still do not trust any major romantic conclusion reached in a taxi after 3 a.m., but I understand why Coral Palms wants to stay in that car until sunrise. ‘Morning Lover’ catches the part of falling for somebody when your standards for reasonable behavior have loosened and you are having too much fucking fun to care. Sometimes the crush survives breakfast. Sometimes it becomes a funny story you tell your friends later. Coral Palms lets the high keep going long enough to make either outcome sound pretty damn good.
