For two decades, UK-based producer Consequential has been well-known in Bury St. Edmunds, England’s underground music scene. They have a knack for immersive tracks suitable for sweaty nights on the dancefloor and ushering the last bodies out of the club as the house lights come up. With their upcoming single Not The Type (dropping February 21, 2025), Consequential leans into a more commercial sound, blending crisp production with introspective lyricism to create something both accessible and deeply personal.
At its core, Not The Type is a liquid drum and bass track—smooth, atmospheric, and effortlessly hypnotic. Liquid Drum & Bass (Liquid DnB) is a subgenre of drum and bass music that is known for its melodic and atmospheric sound. It’s also known as liquid funk or melodic drum & bass. It provides the perfect foundation for Consequential’s vibe. The track carries a chilled-out, almost meditative energy, with airy synths, rolling breaks, and warm basslines that feel weightless. The addition of birdsong brings a natural element to the track and creates an unexpected yet perfectly placed detail within its soundscape.
Lyrically, Not The Type leans into self-reflection. Consequential delivers a theme of introspection and personal growth, a common thread in liquid DnB but one that feels uniquely authentic here. The vocals float effortlessly over the instrumental, balancing emotion with restraint—never overbearing, just enough to pull you into the moment. It’s the kind of track that works just as well through a club sound system as in headphones on a late-night walk.
The recording process was as stripped-back as the song’s effortless feel. Crafted “in the box” with nothing more than a laptop, a sofa, and a new mouse (yes, that’s the only hardware upgrade), Not The Type is a testament to the idea that great music doesn’t need an elaborate setup—just the right vision. Though Consequential’s previous work is deeper and more experimental, this track takes a more commercial approach. It feels polished but not overproduced.
This release is generating all the right buzz because of its dual nature – underground roots meet mass appeal potential. Whether you’ve known Consequential for decades or you’re hearing them for the first time now, Not The Type is one you’ll put on repeat.
