There was a whole era where I operated with an open-door policy. Come in, everyone welcome, I’ll sort out later whether you deserved to be there. You know that phase? Where accommodating everyone looks like being fun and social and down for whatever and you don’t even register how exhausting it is until you’re lying face down in front of the porcelain goddess after late party and wondering why the fuck you’re so depleted. I had that all sophomore and junior year. Then one summer I just stopped. Closed the door. Started doing the math on who actually deserved my energy and the numbers were embarrassing. The pool got smaller. I got a lot harder to impress. ChooKi’s ‘Hop In the Pool’ is the hyper-pop Kesha banger that dropped straight into the middle of that recalibration and said: yeah, girl. Exactly that.
The track opens with ChooKi announcing “I got a brand new feeling / yea tell me boy can you hear it.” And whatever that feeling is, it hits different. It’s the specific frequency of someone who just stopped giving a damn about being palatable. “Follow the manual never / I am for that to clever.” She’s done performing accessibility for people who wouldn’t know what to do with the real thing anyway.

The production is giving full Kesha chaos, this hyper-pop sugar rush with a pulse underneath it that makes your whole body want to move. ChooKi wrote, produced, and recorded this herself, which matters. This is her cauldron. Her rules.
The second verse is where she gets specific about the whole-ass situation. “Not shrinking for man who fear it / I will not hand you freebies / don’t care don’t have to ever / please you my life’s to precious.” I’ve read that back about four times. “My life’s too precious.” Casual as hell. Completely devastating to anyone who’s been waiting for her to negotiate. She’s not.
Then she hits the most chaotic, sexy, shamelessly fun section of the whole track. “Pretty bitch, lip stick / witty lips, think quick / get it, stick with it, kill it.” It’s percussive and physical and it moves like she does, fast and sharp. Completely in control. “She get nitty gritty in it.” That line does something to the room temperature. I’m just going to say it.
The chorus is the whole thesis. “Hot cool smart people only / stop you aren’t cool, homie / if you are cool, show me / hop in tha pool, own it.” The pool she’s inviting you into is the sex pool, the dating pool. It has a velvet rope. Entry isn’t something you talk your way into. She’s done with people who show up without their whole shit together. She’s the audition, full stop.

The outro is where ChooKi goes full chaos agent. “Big day comin, yes, get it next / somethings gotta, gonna, blow up / take whats mine get ya head stepped / that’s my dead body, over, over.” Something’s about to blow up. She’s taking what’s hers. That “dead body” line is her saying: this is the hill and I will die on it. Over and over. That’s a fucking statement.
Her motto is “I make good music for bad people.” I need that tattooed on my body immediately. ChooKi is an Australian artist who writes, produces, and records everything herself, which is already hot, but then she goes and says THAT and suddenly she’s your new favorite boss bitch. Her sound pulls from electro-pop, hyper-pop, punk, metal, EDM, and hip-hop because she physically cannot be contained by a single genre and frankly we respect the chaos. She’s currently rolling out her debut album and if ‘Hop in the Pool’ is any indication, she’s building something. The bad people this music is made for? Yeah, that’s us. Stream this shit immediately.
The open-door policy is officially over. The pool has a guest list and I’m the one holding it. ChooKi just gave us the soundtrack
