Look, I am not confused about what I want. Never have been. My body is a résumé I don’t keep secret and every line item taught me something worth knowing. Some women spend years negotiating with their own desire and making it smaller so it fits inside what they think they’re supposed to want. I skipped that chapter entirely. I go get what I want and I think about it in the shower the next morning with this very specific smile while my legs are still doing that unreliable thing. Listen, if pleasure is a sin then I am a committed and enthusiastic repeat offender and I do not give a shit who knows. ‘Carnal Needs’ by Ché Aimee Dorval is the first fucking song I’ve heard that gets that feeling dead right, that zero-negotiation, full-appetite ownership of your own desire. It’s for girls who show up already decided and leave with their hair destroyed and their dignity fully intact.
Warning – this is not a song for good girls. It’s for girls who say fuck it and let the trouble feel as good as it damn well should. She opens with “Dirty mind, heady virtue / But isn’t all that moral servitude / Born to leap, lust untethered / So is it wrong? / Do you know better?” Choosing virtue over desire is just obedience dressed up as morality. The rules were always someone else’s, I’m just saying. That’s the fucking line. Then she goes somewhere even better “And we alone know the trouble / And could it be ours.” The trouble reframed as something they’re building together, something private that belongs only to the two of them in that room. That moment got me. That’s genius.

Then the chorus “I satisfy all my most carnal needs / Let them ride, let them roam / Open wide, let your most / Carnal needs take control.” She’s giving her desires the wheel and getting the hell out of the way. Done deliberating. Done. The production holds that feeling steady, this gorgeous unhurried pulse that makes taking control feel like the most natural thing in the world. That bar went hard.
Okay but let me be real about what this track is actually doing. So much music about wanting still treats the woman as the receiver. ‘Carnal Needs’ doesn’t do that shit. She’s the one with the appetite and she owns it completely. She knew what she wanted before she got there and she got there and it was toe-curling. She used every second of it while her brain left the building and her body ran the whole damn show. She came loud enough that the neighbors have opinions now, and went back for more because why the hell wouldn’t she. Honestly, same. My one-night stands don’t get names. They get nicknames. I feel seen and incredibly validated.
The second verse goes somewhere colder “We’re born with needs / Can trust we’ll lie / So is it wrong for you and I / To be alone / To know the trouble / When we’re alone / You’ll know the trouble.” That word trouble, showing up twice. They are the trouble, choosing it anyway, eyes wide open. That second delivery landed somewhere damn specific for me. Because real talk, I am not looking for love every night. Sometimes I want someone who listens to instructions. Period.

See, what makes this whole thing land is the production. It’s sultry, downtempo chillwave that moves like it’s been simmering for hours. Think Goldfrapp’s sleek cool with Bonobo’s organic pulse underneath it all. Unhurried as hell. This shit works on your body before your brain catches up, I swear. By the time the lyrics fully register you’re already somewhere else entirely.
Canadian artist Ché Aimee Dorval has serious credentials. She appeared on a haunting duet with Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip and made guest appearances on Devin Townsend’s Lightwork. Her third solo album The Crowned was co-produced by Bob Rock, the man behind Metallica, and Clash Magazine called it “potent and original.” Fresh off a full touring cycle in 2024, she went back in and made something that gets under your fucking skin and stays there. She calls what she makes “soundscapes for those chasing city lights and after-hours reveries” and ‘Carnal Needs’ is where that goes at 2am when everybody knows where the night is going. She gets compared to Lana Del Rey and Goldfrapp and yeah, fair as hell, but this track pushes further into the body. More demanding than either.
The girls who play this have already made up their minds. The destination is decided. The only question is how loud it gets. That’s worth a very specific emoji to the group chat at 11am with zero context required. Ché Aimee Dorval is building something darker and more honest with every release, and ‘Carnal Needs’ is where that evolution gets physical as hell. She built a world out of desire that owns itself completely. No footnotes. No fine print. Consider yourself warned.
