I’ve been the girl on the side and I’ve absolutely had boys on the side, and the whole situation is a good time until someone starts catching feelings and wants a label on it. Sheet-tangled Tuesdays on rotation are manageable. So is checking that nobody left the toilet seat up before your main guy comes over. On the flip side being the reason he’s frantically picking long blonde hairs off his pillow before his brunette girlfriend walks in is a whole other level of shit. Yeah that sounds hypocritical but I’m that bitch, ok? Ain’t no shame in my game. The difference is I don’t want him to be more careful. I want him to end it with her and say my name out loud. That’s the vibe Ceara Cavalieri is giving in ‘Hush,’ her dance-pop single about making him say it out loud.

She opens knowing where she stands with herself – leading with “I know what I want / I can say it oh my god / It’s not that hard” is the energy of someone with full clarity on her own desires who is genuinely baffled that the person across from her can’t do the same. Then she extends an opening: “Tell me what you feel / Can we name it like it’s real / But your lips are sealed.” She’s handing him a chance to step up and he’s sitting there mute, which is infuriating as hell when you consider what she’s working with.
And what she’s working with is considerable. The pre-chorus is where ‘Hush’ gets its charge. She knows he wants her and she leads with that: “Ohhh magnetic / Got you sweating / These genetics / You can’t look away.” She’s building a case before she makes the demand, because his silence makes even less sense when she’s already proven he’s hooked. That’s what makes the pivot land so hard: “Quit playing / I’m done waitin’ / Boy just say it.” She’s past performing about it and ready for him to use his words like a damn adult.
The chorus is where she stops being patient. She opens with “Why you wanna keep it hush? / Am I more than just a crush? / Do you like it when you’re messing with my head every night” and she’s not confused, she’s making him confront it. Then she strips it down: “Sick of being your secret all the time.” Six words, no performance, no drama. She follows by throwing “hush” right back at him: “Hush! / baby do you get a rush?” That’s the most cutting moment in the whole damn track because it shifts the entire frame. She’s asking if he’s doing this on purpose, if the control is the whole point. Then the specific evidence: “Say I’m your girl / But you don’t ever bring me round when you go out with your friends.” He claims her in private and erases her in public and she’s naming that shit out loud. The closer is the one moment of self-awareness in the whole song: “When will I learn? / You keep on spinning me around until you pull me back in again.” She sees the cycle. She’s telling him this is the last time she lets it go without a conversation.

Ceara Cavalieri studied human psychology at UCLA, graduated with a degree she understood perfectly, and then had the absolute audacity to put it all down and make pop music instead. The Southern California singer-songwriter figured out how to get inside people’s heads at a cellular level and then took that knowledge straight into the studio, and the results are fucking unhinged in the best way. Her infectious sound has earned her spots on Spotify’s Fresh Finds, Teen Beats, SALT, Fresh Finds Pop, and Dance Paradise, because the algorithm knows what the rest of us are still catching up to. Her collab work with Canadian DJ/producer EQRIC on “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “The Cure” cracked 2 million streams and charted in Apple Music’s Top 100 Electronic across more than 30 countries, the kind of shit that makes other artists quietly put their phones face-down at dinner. She spent 2023 opening for Leah Kate’s “Super Over” US tour and had the nerve to come back in May 2024 for the EU/UK run, because apparently one continent wasn’t going to be enough for her. International audiences got the full experience and they are not okay about it, which is the whole damn point. Ceara Cavalieri is a goddamn problem and she clearly has no intention of stopping.
The girl who keeps three numbers saved under fake contact names and checks the toilet seat before her main comes over is the same girl who will absolutely lose her shit if someone tries to keep her quiet. Yeah, that’s a double standard we file under ‘hot girl privilege.’ She chose her secrets. Being chosen as his is something else entirely and Ceara Cavalieri is done pretending otherwise. ‘Hush’ is for the girl who plays the game by her own rules and refuses to be kept as someone else’s secret.
