I have been the woman standing in a man’s kitchen at 7am in last night’s clothes when his front door opened and someone walked in who clearly had her own key. I did not handle it gracefully. I stood there holding a coffee mug like a complete idiot for about ten seconds, until four months of shit I had been ignoring became obvious all at once. He had two of us and she had no idea I existed, and he was standing there watching us both figure that out in real time, which is honestly the most fucking brazen thing I have ever witnessed up close. The audacity of that situation is something I still think about. I got dressed in his bathroom and left, and what I said to him on the way out I will not repeat here because this is a music publication and I have some standards left. Then I found someone who actually deserved the rest of my Saturday, which, for the record, was a damn good use of my time. Cassie Ann woke up at 7am and watched the same door open, and ‘Renegade’ is what she did with the morning after.

‘Renegade’ is built around that morning. Cassie Ann woke up at 7am in his apartment and another woman walked through the door, and the song is what she did with the four minutes between that moment and leaving. The production is energetic alt-pop that sounds like adrenaline with a destination, and she made a fucking decision on the spot and the whole track moves with it.
Walking away from someone who thought he had you figured out does something to you that is purely physical. The anger burns off and what is left underneath is clarity, and clarity is a hell of a drug when you have been running on excuses for four months. Cassie Ann took that feeling and built ‘Renegade’ around it. She is already out the door and the production makes sure you feel every damn second of the momentum.
What I cannot get over is the logistics. This man had a schedule. He was managing two separate emotional lives with enough discipline to keep both women from colliding for months, and that requires a level of organizational commitment that is honestly insulting. The audacity of it is some next-level shit, and Cassie Ann is collecting the award for all of us who have stood in that kitchen wondering how the hell we missed it.

Cassie Ann grew up near Munich taking piano and flute lessons at the local music school like a good girl, and then decided a quiet life near Munich was not nearly enough chaos and moved to Berlin at eighteen to study music. From there: LA, Vancouver, Costa Rica, and I respect the hell out of that whole unhinged world tour energy. She collected sounds the way the rest of us collect situationships. She worked with producers and songwriters across multiple continents, added Berklee in Boston along the way because that is just the kind of shit she does, and landed on English as her songwriting language of choice after all of it, which, same. Her sound is pop that makes you want to move, built on heartbreak and the kind of self-discovery that only comes from losing track of yourself across enough different time zones to stop counting. She is damn good at making it feel personal, and counting Tate McRae, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, and Camila Cabello among her biggest influences, her upcoming EP “Journeys of the Heart” is clearly not fucking around.
The version of me that left was better than the one who walked in and I earned that on the spot. I called someone I had been meaning to call for weeks, and the rest of that Saturday was spent in a way that I would describe as thorough and deeply satisfying and entirely my own business. I did not think about him once. Cassie Ann turned the same morning into ‘Renegade’ and made it sound like the best fucking decision she ever made, which, for anyone who has ever been someone’s carefully managed secret, is the only correct response. Walk out. Do not look back. Make it a great Saturday.
