CAPPA’s ‘Run Run Run’ Lets Him Keep Running and Watches Him Go

I spent last Sunday helping my best friend move out of the apartment she’s shared with her boyfriend for a year because asking a grown man about renewing a lease apparently counts as emotional warfare. He answered by sleeping at his brother’s house and sending her three paragraphs about feeling “pressured,” because men will write a fucking memoir before they type yes or no. By the time he came home Sunday, we had most of her life packed into a borrowed SUV and her keys sitting on the kitchen counter. That was when Mr. I Need Space suddenly decided she was abandoning him. I swear, some men only recognize commitment when it is carrying a box down the stairs. She picked up the last bag and walked straight past him while he tried to make his panic her fault. CAPPA brings that same emotionally unavailable bullshit into ‘Run Run Run’ and lets him keep running, because she finally understands his fear was never hers to fix.

The production makes emotional exhaustion sound expensive as hell. CAPPA puts this one in the orbit of BROODS’ Evergreen and Taylor Swift’s 1989, and you can hear it in how clean the low end sits under her while everything above it keeps shimmering. It’s the second song from an EP due later this year and it moves like the good part of a night out, all gloss and momentum, which is a filthy trick to pull on a song about a man who treats intimacy like an evacuation order. What gets me is how little the arrangement flinches while she describes the worst months of somebody’s romantic life. Those synths keep glittering the entire time and she never once raises her voice over them, and that is a colder move than any ballad she could have written about the same fucking man.

Before the first verse was over I had already sent the song to my friend with a note that said, “This is your ex, down to the fucking punctuation.” “I always kind of knew / You didn’t know how to stay / Every time that we got close / You would push me far away.” I have watched friends turn one cold reply into a six-hour investigation because accepting that he keeps leaving on purpose feels worse than inventing another explanation for him. CAPPA has done enough inventing. “My knees are bloody / From crawling on the ground / You never learned to love / And I think I get it now” is what happens when patience turns into self-abandonment and she finally sees how much of herself she has spent making him comfortable. He got a devoted girlfriend doubling as unpaid emotional support staff and she got another fucking excuse out of it.

My favorite choruses are the ones you can scream in the car while mentally dedicating every word to an asshole who has earned the volume. “You can run, run, run if you want to / Say it wasn’t right, but you tried / Put the blame on me, but I know you / You can run, but you can’t hide.” Apparently running away counts as effort if he gives a sad enough explanation afterward. I have read these breakup essays, three screens of feelings without a single accountable sentence in them. He wants her to accept the blame so he can leave believing he is still a good guy, and that shit only works while she remains confused. CAPPA knows him now. She has seen the message and closed the thread.

There are three men in my contact list who need to hear this song and a fourth who would somehow decide it was written about him. “You’d go and turn your back / Anytime that it got real / Like you were scared to face / Things you didn’t wanna feel.” He enjoys affection until it comes with a question he cannot dodge. Once those feelings require a name, he turns his back and acts as if her needs caused the emergency. I have met men who treat emotional honesty as a pop quiz they were never told to study for. Sir, the relationship was the damn syllabus. Her “And yeah, I think I get it now” closes the investigation with one exhausted little shrug. She has finally clocked the truth, and he looks a lot less complicated once the bullshit clears.

Those final four lines took me two passes and the second one made me laugh into my coffee. “In a different person / In a different place / In a different lifetime / You’ll still my face.” A different name beside him will never change the man he brings into the relationship. The same fear will follow him into every zip code and wreck the fresh start before she even knows what the hell she signed up for. CAPPA’s memory is already packed in his luggage, and I hope his emotional bullshit gets charged an overweight fee.

Carla Cappa was named after Carly Simon, which is either elite pop-star foreshadowing or her singer-songwriter mother setting the bar obscenely fucking high. Growing up outside Philadelphia, CAPPA picked up a guitar at seven and started pouring her private thoughts into songs. She headed to Nashville after high school, then introduced the CAPPA project in 2015 when ‘Hush’ premiered on SPIN. Her 2016 EP Queen of Hearts caught the attention of Entertainment Weekly and Billboard, while a cover of ‘No Scrubs’ seduced more than 9 million streams out of the internet. Los Angeles came calling in 2018, and CAPPA soon became a favorite vocalist among electronic artists. Her music slipped into campaigns for Victoria’s Secret and HAUS Laboratories, then followed us onto the couch through Selling Sunset and Riverdale. Honestly, hearing her voice while gorgeous people make terrible decisions on television feels fucking appropriate. With another EP arriving later in 2026, CAPPA is pulling the focus back onto her own delicious mess.

My friend carried the last suitcase downstairs while her ex was still trying to explain why his panic had become her emergency. She left the packing tape on his kitchen counter and blocked him before we reached the car. A week later, he emailed her a paragraph about closure. She forwarded it to me with two words – “Found vocabulary.” CAPPA built ‘Run Run Run’ for that clean little moment when his excuse loses its audience. He wanted distance so badly and she gave him the whole fucking apartment.

Men will write a three-paragraph memoir about feeling pressured before they type yes or no. CAPPA's 'Run Run Run' has that man dead in her sights and the production keeps glittering while she does it.
