I woke up at 3am last month and my first coherent thought was his name. Just his name unprompted and my hand was already on my phone. I put the phone down for forty-five minutes and then I fucking texted him. That’s the pull Bridget Sarai is writing about on ‘MAGIC,’ the kind that doesn’t negotiate, the person whose hands you’re thinking about when you should be sleeping who’s gotten so far under your skin that deciding not to reach out starts to feel like a lie you’re telling yourself.
This record has no business being this addictive. Bridget Sarai is doing something here that you feel between your thighs before you’ve processed a single lyric. It has this after-midnight pull to it -mSZA levels of raw with Rihanna’s ANTI era cool underneath, and the rap edge keeps it feeling like she’s right there talking shit directly at you. This is the song you play when you want to feel dangerous and you don’t give a fuck what happens next.

I’ve had “MAGIC” pulled up for three days and the line I keep coming back to is “you got that magic got have it,” because it isn’t about tricks. She’s talking about the specific kind of power someone has over your body – the pull that makes you pick up the phone when you swore you were done, the thing that lives in his hands and his mouth and the way he looks at you, and she’s saying she can’t get enough of it and she’s not even trying to quit. That’s the magic. That’s the whole fucking song.
She announces the whole thing immediately and I was not prepared for how physical it feels. “It’s an open invitation” lands like a door swinging wide and she’s already in the doorway waiting. “You can leave your complications at your door / bring my expectations / get a taste of the revelation” and she is already running the room before the verse is even done. No explanation, just show up and take what she’s been saving for you, and I love her for that. Then she goes somewhere that stopped me cold. “All I wanna feel is you / take in all of me / I’ll do / what I know you need / me too.” I’ve felt that “me too.” The moment you realize you need this as badly as he does, that you’ve been thinking about his hands on you, and the only fucking thing left is to say it. “Be your sweet escape / is that true / tell me its true” is the one crack, the moment she needs to hear it back, and coming from someone this confident it cuts deeper for it.
I’ve played this chorus probably forty times and it gets me every time. “It’s no reason for you to overcomplicate it / no invitation needed you got it like that / just call me I’ll come running / I’ll come right back to you.” She’s done negotiating. She’ll answer every time and she’s saying it with no shame attached whatsoever, and that is the sexiest goddamn thing I’ve heard all week.
I needed to sit with the rap section because she goes somewhere that made me feel personally called out. She’s awake at whatever hour, eyes closed, completely stuck. “I wonder why when I close eyes / and all I seem to think about is you / got me thinkin bout the things I shoulda said / all the things we eva did / I be thinkin you be thinkin it too / yup.” We’ve all been in that loop. Going over every moment, every time he touched you, and the “yup” is her being completely certain he’s doing the exact same shit on his end. I’ve sat with that “yup” for three days and I still feel it. She’s probably right. “Cause the way that the situation panned out / got my waiting in anticipation / will I eva see ya again / I wanna see ya again / learnin a lesson its stressing me out.” She sees it and she’s staying in it anyway, and she does not give a damn about the contradiction.

Then she gets into the body of it and I need you to pay attention here. “I wanna fulfill ya pleasures / every sensation / yea I be takin time an thinkin bout that / feel it in ya body ya body’s on me / and there’s no taking that back.” She’s been lying awake thinking about this. His body on hers. Running it all the way through in her head, and there’s no fucking taking any of it back once she gets there. I have been there and it is a hell of a feeling. “Abracadabra I think I’m under your power / cause when I disappear I come right back” and here’s where it flips: she’s been the one casting the spell all song long and then she admits he’s had her the whole time. She keeps coming back. Every time. She’s under it and she owns it. “Maybe I done made the magic my habit / let me blow it don’t pass it / fill it up and just let me just gas out” and she is all the way in. She made this her habit and she is not stopping.
Bridget Sarai is a Los Angeles-born songwriter and performer who spent years touring the world as a background and session vocalist for legendary artists before deciding she was done making other people sound incredible and it was time to make herself sound incredible. The audacity and we are fully here for it. Her sound pulls from Caribbean rhythm, R&B groove, and jazz-kissed sensuality with vocals that can float into vulnerability one second and knock you flat on you ass the next which is a genuinely unfair combination to put on one person. Her sound carries Rihanna’s edge, Sade’s cool, and Gwen Stefani’s fire and she’s clearly been studying all three and doing her own damn thing with the notes. Now she’s turning her pen inward, writing songs that dive into the beauty and chaos of love, heartbreak, and healing, and the rest of us are going to need a fucking minute to catch up.
The guy I mentioned at the beginning of this responded in four minutes. I was there by 4am and didn’t leave until noon. I walked home in last night’s clothes feeling like the main character and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Bridget Sarai called it magic and she’s goddamn right, and if you’ve got someone like that in your phone this song is going to cost you a night’s sleep and you already know it.
