I have a deeply professional relationship with avoidance. I can leave a text unanswered for six hours while thinking about it every eleven minutes, then decide the mature move is to go out for drinks and pretend my phone died. Gorgeous behavior. Brette Alana understands the impulse on IDONTWANNATALKABOUTIT, her debut single built around that moment when keeping everything shoved down starts requiring more energy than losing your shit. She takes the phrase we use when somebody gets a little too close to the truth and gives it guitars and enough attitude to make shutting down sound hot as hell. I support this coping mechanism musically.

The production starts restrained and keeps tightening until the whole fucking thing finally gives way. Co-written and produced by Zev Troxler of Lynn Verlayne Studio, IDONTWANNATALKABOUTIT moves through alt-pop into grittier alt-rock as Brette’s vocal gets increasingly pissed off. The guitars arrive with real bite while the arrangement keeps enough space around her voice to make the escalation feel personal. There’s something sexy about hearing somebody maintain control right up until control becomes wildly overrated. By the time Brette lets the anger fully into the room, the song has stopped asking nicely for emotional space and started kicking furniture around.
That tension comes directly from Brette’s instinct to shut down. “When vulnerability is met with criticism, ridicule, dismissal, or judgment, you learn very quickly that honesty can feel dangerous,” she says. Over time, shutting conversations down became second nature. “The phrase ‘I don’t wanna talk about it’ became a survival mechanism.” The song carries that history in its teeth. She sounds exhausted with swallowing shit for everybody else’s comfort, and the performance gets stronger every time that restraint starts cracking. There’s no tidy inspirational bow tied around it. She sounds pissed. Good. Sometimes anger deserves an amplifier instead of another fucking journal prompt.
Bay Area-born Brette Alana is now based in Redding, California, and IDONTWANNATALKABOUTIT marks her first official single. Her background includes growing up around addiction and serious family instability, experiences she now feeds into songwriting centered on emotional honesty. Troxler brings credits connected to artists including David Guetta and Grimes, giving Brette an experienced production partner for a debut that already feels comfortable getting loud. Brette sees the single as chapter one, with future music digging further into the emotional territory she spent years keeping off-limits.

I’ll probably continue leaving messages unanswered while claiming I’m “processing.” Brette found the more entertaining option and plugged the avoidance into an amp. IDONTWANNATALKABOUTIT sounds like somebody finally getting sick of swallowing the fucking conversation and letting the whole messy thing come out sideways. For a debut, that’s a pretty hot entrance.
