I keep a guy specifically for Tuesday nights when I’ve had a glass of wine and I’ve decided I want something, and what I want is him in my bed working for my pleasure until I’m done with him for the evening. There’s no situation to manage here. He’s got a first name I use when the moment calls for it and a number in my phone I’ve memorized at this point, and our entire dynamic is that when I send the text, he shows up, and when I’m finished I’m finished, and nobody performs feelings they don’t have. My friends know about him in that way where they know everything and say nothing except occasionally “good for you.” He’s been tucked away across town through two relationships and counting, completely secret and that setup that works because I made it that way. AZSH just put the whole thing into a Miami dance-pop track and called it ‘Mood’ with the confidence of a woman who has absolutely been here and destroys the fucking evidence.
The production is all tight Miami pulse and AZSH’s vocals are dripping with it before she’s even gotten to the good part. She opens with “Tell me somethin’ / Can we not think of tomorrow / For the moment / Let’s go airplane mode M.I.A.” and I have texted this energy to that number in my phone at 10:45pm on more than one occasion. Airplane mode means the outside world can sort itself out for a few hours. She’s already in the room with him, already decided, and tomorrow can go fuck itself.

Then she gets to the part that made me audibly react alone in my apartment. “I’ve got a one-way ticket for you to my arms / Just for fun / And I won’t send you back until I say we’re done” and “until I say we’re done” is doing so much heavy lifting in five words. She wants him there, in her, working until she has gotten every single thing she came for, and she is the one holding the clock. I had a guy once who treated my orgasm like a bonus feature he was generously including, and I stopped returning his texts so fast. AZSH is not dealing with that energy. She issued the ticket and she controls the return flight.
She explains why the arrangement works in about eight words and she’s right about all of it. “Burn at both ends / Baby we’re just like a candle / Lovers and friends / See you on the other side” means you actually like the person, which means the sex is genuinely good and not just logistically convenient, and that is a shit-ton harder to find than people admit. I like my guy. I like talking to him after. I like that he makes me laugh and then makes me come and neither of us makes it weird, and finding that is rare as hell. Then she goes further. “Elevation / Let’s just see how high we can go / Motivation / Take it to another level” and that is a woman who knows what she wants out of the next few hours and is actively chasing it. The production underneath her is pure momentum, bright and relentless, like it’s daring her to keep going.
The lyric I keep coming back to is the one that names the whole thing out loud. “Let’s not pay any time / To the games of the mind / We don’t call it devotion / Just the sweetest emotion” and “we don’t call it devotion” is the line that separates women who know what they’re doing from women who are about to cry in a parking lot. She’s in the moment and refusing to let her brain turn a good night into a feelings conversation. Then she takes it further. “If we turn out the lights / We’ll keep dancing all night / It’s the start of a fever / Let’s make you a believer” and that is the part of the night I live for, when the pretending is done and the only thing left is what’s actually happening between the two of you. She wants him to believe in what she can do to him, and it’s going to be a fucking spiritual experience for him.

“You’re such a mood” is the most casual sexual compliment I’ve ever heard and I mean that as the highest possible praise. She’s telling him: you are the specific feeling I reach for on a specific kind of night, and tonight is that night, and that is all this needs to be. I have said this to someone and meant every damn word of it, and hearing it in a song this good felt like being seen by a stranger who somehow knows everything. AZSH has been building toward this moment and ‘Mood’ is the lead single from her self-titled debut that dropped last month. If the rest of that album sounds like this, we’re all in serious trouble.
AZSH (say it like “Ash,” and say it like you mean it) is a Miami-based pop-soul artist who makes music that hits the way Miami actually feels at 1am when the night is still wide open and so are you. She calls her sound “Miami Pop” and that’s not a genre description so much as a vibe warning, because her vocals are sultry enough to make you forget your own name and her production is clean enough to play loud with the windows down on the way to make a decision you won’t regret. Since 2021 she’s been self-releasing a catalog of singles with visuals that are as sharp as the music, and recent tracks have been picking up radio support because that’s what happens when someone makes shit that actually sounds like freedom feels. AZSH is out here building something real, track by track, on her own terms, and the music moves exactly the way she wants it to.
The guy is still in my phone. Tuesday night was a 10pm decision and a very good one, and ‘Mood’ played on the way home with the windows down and my hair wrecked and everything still humming. Current boyfriend none the wiser. AZSH made this for girls who run this kind of operation and feel nothing about it except satisfied.
