Here’s what nobody warns you about on-again, off-again relationships: there’s one hour where your whole nervous system goes completely feral, and it is not midnight when you’re still at the bar telling yourself you’re doing great. It’s 3am. When the bar is closed and your mascara is somewhere in the vicinity of your chin and your phone is burning hot from two straight hours in your hand and the only thing standing between you and a text you will absolutely regret is the last thread of dignity you’re white-knuckling. I know this hour. I have logged serious, embarrassing time there. The version of me that exists at 3am has made decisions the 9am version had absolutely no explanation for. She texted back. She unlocked the door and said “okay, just this once” more times than I’m going to say out loud right now. And every single damn time, sitting there in that particular dark, I was completely convinced the feeling was love. Ava Della Pietra wrote ‘3am’ for that girl. This is a heartstrings-tugging hot girl breakup track for when you instinctively know he’s going to miss you more than you’re going to miss him, but in the moment, it sure as fuck doesn’t feel that way.
The song drops you right into the scene. “The last train leaves at half past two / and I’m crying watching you / a familiar suitcase, the same goodbye / you speak but never meet my eye.” That familiar suitcase. He’s packed it before. She knows this whole routine by heart, has watched this performance enough times to direct it herself, and she is still standing there in tears. He won’t even look at her when he says it’s over, which, look, that detail does something to you. He already knows he’ll be back.
The pre-chorus lands right there and doesn’t let you breathe. She calls herself a broken record for lying again, for saying they’ll patch it up. She even calls his breakup speech his “favorite line,” which is such a knowing read of the whole dynamic. This is a man who is not surprised by his own behavior and neither is she which is the shit that actually hurts.

Production-wise, Alex Koste wrapped all of this in something warm and intimate, soft enough that you could almost believe the chorus. The sound is late-night bedroom energy: low light, the kind of quiet where every small sound gets amplified. Ava’s vocals start in this delicate, almost reassuring place, like she’s talking herself down as much as she’s singing. By the final chorus she is done talking herself into anything. The shift is gradual. It is also devastating.
Real talk, the origin story of this song is perfect. Ava was up late one night facing a decision she didn’t want to make and a friend told her to “take the night think it over.” That phrase became the first line of the chorus. She woke up the next morning and built the whole narrative around it. “3am is about an on-again off-again relationship,” she says, “that always seems to unravel in the early hours when emotions are raw and we’re at our most vulnerable.” Accurate as hell. Then she adds “It’s about the pull of someone who feels impossible to quit and the clarity that finally tells you it’s time to walk away.” Two sentences and she’s described every girl who’s ever stood in a hallway at 3am talking herself into one more try. You weren’t confused. You were avoiding clarity. Ava Della Pietra just said it out loud for all of us.
The second verse picks up two weeks later, because of course it does. He’s back. She’s back. Then the door slams again and she’s further from okay than she was before, a little more of herself gone each time. The door slams, the echo stays, and she’s still there. That cycle of coming and going is the part of this relationship nobody puts in their notes app at midnight. You don’t notice the erosion in real time.
The bridge is where she stops performing okay-ness and gets brutally plain about it. “You do it so naturally / when you walk away / as I beg you to stay / every time it stung, I thought that was love.” I had to sit with that last line I’m not gonna lie. Damn. A whole therapy session compressed into nine words. We have all been there. Mistaken the ache for depth. Told ourselves the intensity was proof of something real. She doesn’t dress it up. She just says it, and it wrecks you. Then the second part of the bridge arrives and she describes him reappearing the exact moment she’s finally starting to breathe again. The timing these men have is genuinely its own talent and I am fucking tired of admiring it.
The music video is arthouse and fully committed: dimly lit, dreamlike, the same moments looping. Clock glances, shadowed hallways, quiet rooms that feel too close. It reads like the inside of your head at 3am when you’ve been running the same argument in circles for two hours and you’re no closer to an answer than when you started.

Then the final chorus arrives and everything flips. “I took the night thought it over / you better get going, it’s 3 am / ’cause you and I are over / if you love me you’ll never come back again.” She kept the melody and the hour and changed the verdict. That is the whole song right there, that one pivot from begging him to stay to telling him to go, same voice, completely different woman.
Okay so Ava Della Pietra was literally on Broadway before most of us were allowed to stay home alone, and I need everyone to understand how unhinged that is. This New York-born, Italian-American girl was doing national tours of Les Misérables and White Christmas at seven years old and somehow that wasn’t enough, so she went ahead and joined the original cast of School of Rock at the actual Winter Garden Theatre. She started writing songs at five and has over 130 of them in her catalog at twenty, so whatever you’re doing with your twenties, congrats I guess. The girl plays four instruments because apparently narrowing it down felt like giving up, and her music has racked up over 22 million streams while she’s been getting darker and more interesting with singles like ‘Marionette’ and ‘Single for Life,’ which, yes, we are all going to listen to on the way home tonight. And listen, if you’re not already a little bit intimidated, she’s also studying biology at Harvard while simultaneously enrolled at Berklee. Both. At the same time. I’m obsessed with her and I don’t even fully understand how she exists.
She recorded ‘3am’ from a voice memo in the middle of the night which is a very on-brand origin story for a track about losing your mind at that hour. She took the night. She thought it over. What came out the other side is the song I wish I’d had back when I was standing in my own hallway at 3am convincing myself it was love. It wasn’t love. It was just the last thing left when the lights went out and the guard came down. Anyway, stream it and don’t text him.
