I have this habit of picking a project and deciding he is the love of my life and the messier his baggage the harder I fall. My therapist calls it a codependent trauma response but I call it a fucking Friday night. There is this high that comes from sitting across from a man who is giving me absolutely nothing, while I mentally reorganize my entire personality to match whatever I think he needs. I know I am doing it to myself, I know the exit strategy, and I pour another drink anyway because the delusion feels too good to abandon. That is the swamp Annie Elise drags us into with ‘make a wish.’ She captured that obsessive spiral where she actively manifests the chaos and loses herself trying to fix someone who has no interest in being saved.
This synthpop track is literally a masterclass in pure, unadulterated situational delusion and self-sabotage. Annie actively manifested this toxic chaos and dove headfirst into his unprocessed baggage like she could single-handedly fix him, and now she’s stuck in a codependent spiral where she’s centering her entire existence around a man who is giving her absolutely nothing. It’s giving full-blown cognitive dissonance – she knows the exit strategy, but she’s conveniently forgotten it because she’s too big dickmatized to care about the warning signs. Basically, it’s the ultimate score for the unrequited, obsessive loop where she’s so addicted to the mess she created that she’s retroactively gaslighting herself to keep the delusion alive, and honestly, we need to pack our emotional bags and get the fuck out.

She opens the track by calling out her own accountability in this toxic dynamic, begging for this situationship and now having to lie in it. The tone is set with a sultry demand, pushing herself to own the chaos she invited into her bed. “Close your eyes and make a wish / Remember that you wanted this / If you want to reminisce / You will need to sit and finish / Every little thing you ever started / You can’t do anything half-hearted.” There’s a physical edge to the way she demands he finish what she started, like a challenge whispered against his collar before she pulls him by his belt loop and makes him finish the job. She wanted this dick energy but make it emotionally ruinous, and she is not letting herself back the fuck out now.
Things get darker and much more physical as she pushes past the surface level baggage. She knows he has emotional damage, but instead of running for the hills, she volunteers to consume it. “Close your eyes and take a trip / Let’s go see what she keeps hidden / I won’t drown, I’m diving in / Let it consume me from within.” This is that era where she is actively volunteering to be consumed by someone else’s dysfunction. She is grinding against him and telling him to let her fix him while she takes everything he has to give. The way she sings about diving in makes the self-sabotage sound like foreplay – leaning into the danger because the friction feels too good to pass up. This is some next-level shit.
Brain fog rolls in before the chorus drops – trapping her in that space where she knows she needs to cut the cord but the chemistry is too strong. “One day I’ll finish what I started / I know the way but I’ve forgotten.” She knows the exit strategy, but she has conveniently forgotten it because his hands are down her pants and doing wicked things to her judgment. Then the chorus drops and we are in full unrequited, obsessive spiral territory. “I am hanging by a thread / In the center of the room / Pretending everything I ever said was meant for you / You aren’t looking at me yet / But I think you’ll notice me / Soon / You have to listen for the truth.” She is literally centering her entire existence around a man who is giving her nothing, doing the absolute most and riding the edge of his attention while he stares at his stupid fucking phone to keep the delusion alive.
That cycle loops back around, forcing her to question if she would even want a healthy dynamic if it was offered to her. “Close your eyes and make a wish / Would you really choose different? / Try and hold a proper grip / Is there ever an easy fix / To everything that I have started? / I know the way, but I’ve forgotten.” She is trying to maintain a grip on reality while he takes her against a wall, asking herself if there is an easy way out. She is so addicted to the drama she created that she forgets how to leave, preferring the heat of the chaos over the cold reality of walking her ass out the door.

Annie literally sees music as colors and started out living her best classically trained violinist life in Pennsylvania, until a focal dystonia diagnosis in her hand threatened to derail everything – but instead of letting a physical setback break her, she pulled the ultimate career glow-up by pivoting straight into music production. She leveled up into a total industry powerhouse by landing an A&R role at Nettwerk and arranging strings for literal icons like Orville Peck. Dropping her own remixes actually forced her to heal her violin trauma. And because she’s an absolute overachiever, she randomly took over China by going massively viral on Douyin with her husband and gaining over a million followers through their raw cross-cultural content before basically hard-launching her entire musical brand to a massive global audience. It’s giving zero excuses, it’s giving resilience, and it’s the ultimate reminder that when one door closes, you can literally just pivot and manifest an entirely bigger fucking empire. That kind of unapologetic ambition is hot as hell.
My therapist would tell me to delete his number and stop volunteering to be a free clinic for broken men. She might be right, but I will probably pour another drink and dive right back into the mess anyway. Annie built a synthpop trap for girls who romanticize their own ruin, and I am perfectly content staying caught in it. ‘make a wish’ makes the self-sabotage sound too damn good to leave behind.
