Allegra’s ‘Sober’ Leaves Him Thirsty at Last Call

One of my favorite male miracles happens around drink three, when the ex who spent the relationship emotionally constipated suddenly finds a fucking vocabulary. Give him another round and now he misses you so much he could write sonnets on a cocktail napkin. Allegra’s ‘Sober’ knows this guy intimately. He had plenty of daylight hours to love her properly and blew every one of them. Now he gets to discover his feelings after midnight while she looks hotter across the room and treats his drunk sincerity like the temporary condition it is. Sorry, babe. Tequila does not count as character development.

House chords push ‘Sober’ straight onto the dance floor, which is where this breakup belongs. Allegra keeps the rhythm bright enough to make rejection feel like something you could scream with your girlfriends after the second vodka soda. The chant-ready hook does a lot of the dirty work because “You’ll never love me when you’re sober” gets meaner every time it circles back. I can already hear a packed room yelling that line while somebody’s ex stands three feet away pretending he cannot hear it. That is the kind of petty I fully support.

Drunk love sounds romantic right up until you realize he only seems to find it after last call. “You’ll never love me when you’re sober” takes every sloppy late-night confession he has ever made and stamps an expiration date on it. Allegra already knows what happens when the buzz disappears because his courage usually sobers up right along with him. “Not gonna listen ’cause your heart’s a liar” sounds like the moment you finally stop confusing drunk honesty with actual effort. He can tell the bartender he loves you and unload the rest on his Uber driver. Until he can say that shit over coffee with a clear head, nobody asked.

Then Allegra does something much more fun than forgiving him. She puts him behind the fucking velvet rope. “I’m a piece of art, so never put your hands on me” turns this breakup into a museum with one very horny man stuck on the wrong side of the barrier. “You can look but don’t touch” is brutal because she knows looking is going to hurt him more. He still gets the dress and the glow-up from across the room, with access permanently removed from the package. The Cleopatra and Mona Lisa references make that ego feel earned because Allegra is treating herself like something valuable enough to display while he stands there wishing admission came with touching privileges. Tough shit. The exhibit is closed.

And thank God she is petty enough to keep score. “I had to glow up, left you standing in the dark / I guess it’s obvious who won the breakup” is delightfully bitchy because sometimes the scoreboard is right there in the fucking room. She looks better and he looks thirsty, which makes her “hundred bullet points” line even funnier because she has apparently audited the relationship and his score is sitting somewhere below passing. Another vodka soda is not getting him extra credit.

So Allegra gets to talk her shit because she has the career receipts to back it up. She’s 24 and London-based, with a career that started when she signed at 14. A decade later she says she knows herself much better creatively and has become comfortable voicing what she wants. Her dance-pop run has already put her alongside Tiësto on ‘Round & Round’ and Alok on ‘Love You Right Back’. ‘Romantic’ arrived August 21 as the lead single from her Unreleased EP, with Scott Stoddart producing and co-writing the song with Allegra and Benjamin Samama. That growing confidence fits ‘Sober’ beautifully because romantic Allegra finally sounds done leaving the door cracked for a questionable man. He can admire the glow-up from the bar.

At some point the bartender turns the lights up and every drunk confession has to survive fluorescent reality. He can spend the night believing another round will make his case stronger, then wake up with a dry mouth and the same woman still unavailable. ‘Sober’ gives him one hell of a hangover because she already figured out the part he keeps drinking to forget. He lost her while he was completely fucking conscious.

Allegra’s ‘Sober’ gives breakup pettiness a house-pop beat. She looks better, he looks thirsty, and another vodka soda is doing absolutely nothing for his appeal.
