Alexis Lace’s ‘Ain’t Nothing Better’ Is a Love Letter to Me Time

There are days when the pressure of leaving the house feels like a scam invented by people who own comfortable shoes and have no fucking seasonal allergies. Give me an empty calendar, a sports bra and enough snacks to survive until dark, and I will happily disappear from society. Alexis Lace gets it on ‘Ain’t Nothing Better’, a bright alt-pop ode to the deeply underrated pleasure of having nowhere to be and nobody expecting access to you. She is not lonely, waiting for plans or secretly hoping someone rescues her from the couch. She has the whole fucking day to herself, which means everybody else has officially become optional. I support this level of selfish scheduling because sometimes the hottest person you can spend Saturday with is the bitch in your own mirror.

The production keeps ‘Ain’t Nothing Better’ light enough to match that freedom. Alexis made the track from her own bedroom setup which fits a song built around staying where you are and enjoying the hell out of it. Her self-produced approach gives the record an intimate homemade closeness while the bright pop energy keeps the homebody premise from turning sleepy. There is a little country in the way she tells the story while the groove pulls from R&B and she is totally making a case for me time without dressing it up as wellness homework. Sometimes you stay home because staying home fucking rules.

She opens with “No alarm think I overslept / But it’s so nice to stay in bed / When I got the day to myself / Excited for what lies ahead,” and I immediately trust this woman. Oversleeping becomes an achievement when nobody owns your morning. Then she offers the fake invitation with “I got the whole day off baby / D’you want to spend it with me / I got the whole day off baby / And Imma spend it with me.” That little switch is the entire mood. Babe, thank you for asking, but the position has already been filled.

The chorus commits even harder with “Babe I’m a loner / Homebody loser / But ain’t nothing better / Ain’t nothing sweeter,” before delivering the unofficial uniform through “A comfy sweater / Sports bra and joggers.” Calling herself a “homebody loser” feels wonderfully unserious because she sounds way too pleased with herself for the insult to carry any weight. This is somebody luxuriating in her own company while the rest of us invent excuses for declining brunch. Fuck an excuse. Sometimes I simply do not want pants with buttons.

Verse two improves the itinerary with “Maybe I’ll have some more chocolate / A glass of wine and cigarette / I’ll watch a film procrastinate / Or get busy and stay up late.” I appreciate a woman whose personal agenda allows both accomplishing shit and accomplishing absolutely nothing. Then “I got the whole day off baby / And you won’t spend it with me” turns solitude into a choice she is actively protecting. By the final “It’s me time o’clock baby,” the message is basically written in permanent marker. Her day belongs to her and anyone trying to interrupt it can kindly fuck off until tomorrow.

Alexis Lace is a London-based independent singer-songwriter and producer who started writing songs at 12 before pursuing acting professionally and eventually circling back to music during the pandemic. She built a home studio and took control of the entire process herself. She handles the full creative and studio process herself, carrying songs from the first idea through the finished master. Her catalog has moved through post-grunge, electronic pop and darker genre experiments across releases including Oxygen, Love Me Or Hate Me and Unhinged. Now working toward a fifth album planned for 2027, Alexis has made that level of creative control part of her artistic identity rather than a temporary workaround. (soundcloud.com)

So my imaginary Saturday remains gloriously empty. ‘Ain’t Nothing Better’ understands that a free day does not require optimizing, documenting or sharing with another human being to count as time well spent. Sometimes happiness is wine in your own glass while your phone sits somewhere you cannot hear the damn thing. Alexis can keep the invitation list at one. I already changed into joggers.

Alexis Lace's 'Ain't Nothing Better' is for anyone who sees an empty calendar and thinks, thank fuck. Snacks, wine and nobody asking you to leave the couch sounds pretty perfect to me.
