ALBI.’s ‘Short Sighted’ Calls Out the Self-Sabotage We All Do

I once spent a weekend with a man who was genuinely, embarrassingly out of my league, and instead of enjoying every second of it I spent the whole time waiting for him to figure that out. I kept checking my phone for an excuse to leave and analyzing every pause in conversation – making myself smaller and smaller in a king-sized bed I’d worked my ass off to end up in. He never figured it out and by the time I realized what I’d been doing to myself the weekend was basically over. ALBI.’s ‘SHORT SIGHTED’ is the song I needed that weekend, the one that tells you to stop auditing an experience you fucking earned.

‘SHORT SIGHTED’ is the fourth single off her debut EP IF YOU GET IT, dropping May 21st, and the run of releases she’s been on is starting to feel like a fucking statement. After “GRAVIT82U,” “HEARTSONG” with Jewel Owusu, and “CRASHOUT,” she’s arriving here with serious momentum and it shows in the production. The production is genuinely restless, all glitchy electronic edges with pop instincts sharp enough to make it feel urgent as hell, sitting somewhere between hyperpop and alt-pop in that specific space ALBI. POP has made its home. Lyrically it’s about self-doubt and the pressure that shows up when you’re stepping into something new, that comparison spiral where fear starts doing more talking than you do. She’s headlining Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in London on the EP release date, which is a hell of a way to announce yourself.

The opening verse goes somewhere uncomfortably specific. ALBI. describes finally arriving at the life she used to fantasize about and then catching herself manufacturing every possible objection to actually living it. She opens with “I used to dream of all the things that now fill up my plate / Then look for any reason why I shouldn’t eat.” The opportunity is right there, the table is set, and she’s the one refusing to sit down. Then: “Now looky found another chance here to complain / What a waste to live short sighted.” She can see herself doing it in the moment, knows it’s self-destructive, and is calling herself out anyway. That’s the kind of internal reckoning most people avoid having out loud and the fact that she put it in a song is honestly kind of badass.

Her chorus gets into the actual mechanics of how that avoidance operates, and it’s uncomfortably specific in a way that makes you go “oh shit, that’s me.” She frames it as exhausting, circular behavior: “You spin in circles baby / To make the picture clearer / While wasting all your time / Trying to change the mirror.” All that frantic energy going toward adjusting surface-level things instead of doing the actual internal work. Then she gets genuinely ruthless with herself: “Your future self could save you / But you still wouldn’t hear her.” She can see who she’s capable of becoming. She’s actively choosing not to listen. That’s a specific kind of self-inflicted hell, and ALBI. describes it without any softening whatsoever.

Somewhere in the bridge, ‘SHORT SIGHTED’ stops sitting in the discomfort and gets fed the fuck up. “Stand the hell up and remember / No nepo baby can buy the drive that comes from your hunger no.” That line is doing serious work, acknowledging that inherited privilege exists and then refusing to give it any power, because what she has is something that cannot be purchased or replicated. “They’ll wanna wear it counterfeit, liar / But you’re so rare that you out price any of their designer.” The people coasting on connections will attempt to imitate the look of someone who actually earned it, and they’ll never pull it off. Then: “You’re just gonna sit there and compare, no comparison here / Remember who you are.” There is no legitimate equivalence to be drawn, and she’s done pretending otherwise. The pre-chorus “Get out of your own way / The hungry can go without / Don’t lose it now” is ALBI. refusing to coddle herself, demanding action over comfort. This is not a song that holds your hand. It yanks your chain and demands you get your shit together.

ALBI. is a Brisbane-based alt-pop artist of Argentine and Uruguayan descent who still clocks warehouse shifts between releases, and the image of someone building a career this fast while doing that is honestly the kind of thing you screenshot and send to your group chat with zero context. She calls her sound ALBI. POP, which it earns with glitchy electronic production and hooks that have an inexplicable ability to colonize your brain. Her lyrics do this thing where they feel uncomfortably personal for someone who’s never met you, which, for the record, is a goddamn compliment. Her singles “Y2K,” “god complex,” and “Bling” got Spotify’s attention fast: she landed on hot girl shit and New Music Friday AU & NZ, which, if you know those playlists, tells you what kind of energy she’s bringing. Evolver and Fresh Finds came next, along with Triple J Unearthed, Apple Music, Deezer, and TIDAL. She’s shared stages with KYE, Jewel Owusu, and DEVAURA, and she’s building momentum at a pace that makes the warehouse feel very temporary.

I’ve had that weekend a few more times since, different man, same king-sized bed energy, and I’m significantly better at actually showing up for it now instead of waiting to be sent home. ‘SHORT SIGHTED’ is part of that. ALBI. wrote the thing you need to hear before your own damn head ruins something you actually deserve.

ALBI.'s 'Short Sighted' is a glitchy, hyperpop-adjacent gut check about self-sabotage, comparison spirals, and remembering who the hell you are. From her debut EP IF YOU GET IT, out May 21st.
