37 Houses’s New Track ‘Eye for an Eye’ Drowns in Love on Purpose

Drowning on purpose is different from going under by accident. One means you opened your mouth and let the water rush in because feeling something crush your lungs felt better than breathing safely. The other means you fought and lost. 37 Houses’ “Eye for an Eye” lives in that first space where suffocation becomes devotion and silence becomes survival. Singer Erin Sydney is so fucking in love she can’t speak, can’t move, can’t do shit except hold it inside and let it destroy her slowly. This track grabs your attention without asking. The guitars warble and swell like something underwater. Erin’s vocals soar and then drop like someone remembering how to breathe right before they forget again. Too pissed to cry. Too fucking scared to speak. That’s the whole goddamn song.

She’s holding something she can’t speak. “I sigh / And you say / ‘What’s on your mind’ / Like you sensed it.” She can’t say it. Won’t. The moment someone asks what you’re thinking is the moment you have to decide if saying it out loud makes it real or kills it dead. Erin chooses silence. Every fucking time. “I try / For a moment / ‘It’s such a shame’ / I can’t say it.” There it is. The admission that not speaking is its own violence. Keeping love locked in your throat until it rots. That’s what this is. A song about spiraling while standing completely still.

The production on “Eye for an Eye” hits raw. Guitars bounce and sway with that 90s alt-rock shimmer. Ugly in the right way. Nothing polished. Nothing fucking safe. The rhythm section drives forward like someone who’s done explaining themselves. The vocals climb into the stratosphere and then crash back down without warning. Sounds like sweat, feedback, and bad intent. The whole track feels like it’s barely holding itself together. Perfect for a song about falling apart on the inside while pretending everything’s fine on the outside.

The world’s fucked anyway. “I dream / Of a day when / We see / This world ain’t worth savin.” Nihilism wrapped in intimacy. If the world’s already fucked then why fight convention. Why explain yourself. Why do anything except sink deeper into the one thing that feels real even if it kills you. “I trust / You completely / You could / Finally believe me.” Trust here isn’t faith. It’s resignation. She trusts this person completely, but she still can’t say the words out loud because vulnerability has hurt her before, and she remembers. The chorus hits hard. “Tell me please / Is there any light you can see / I’m drowning but / So In love.” Drowning isn’t the problem. Love is. Being so fucking gone for someone that breathing feels optional.

37 Houses is Erin Sydney on vocals and bass and guitarist Jeremy Rosenblum. The band started as a journal for the couple after they got married and went straight into lockdown four months later. Right when lockdown hit and everything went to shit. The music became their way of processing love and pain in real time. Their sophomore album When and How it Happened chronicles 18 months of learning to be polyamorous in a developing marriage. Then learning not to be. They tried polyamory and then closed it back up. Polyamory is cool as fuck if you can make it work, but dangerous if you can’t and it’ll fuck you up. Turns out opening a relationship when you’re still figuring out how to close the distance between two people is its own kind of drowning. “Eye for an Eye” sits right in that suffocating middle where love and destruction look identical.

She knows something and won’t say it. “I know / But I’m not telling / Its time / We followed convention.” She’s holding it. Letting it crush her instead of speaking it. Convention means monogamy. Convention means saying the thing out loud instead of letting it fester. Convention means admitting you’re drowning before you go under for good. But she doesn’t. She holds it. Lets it crush her. “You trade / In sad stories / It’s such a shame / You can’t ignore me.” They tried polyamory and then closed it back up and now they’re stuck in the wreckage trying to remember how they used to speak to each other before everything got complicated. This song doesn’t romanticize shit. It just shows you what suffocation looks like when you choose it.

The bridge strips everything down. “I sigh / And say / ‘Eye for an eye’ / So save it.” Revenge logic applied to intimacy. You hurt me so I hurt you by staying silent. I drown so you drown too. “I cry / For a moment / Its such a shame / How we crave it.” Craving the pain. Craving the drama. Craving the fucked-up intimacy of two people who can’t speak but won’t leave. When you’re too pissed off to cry. When you’re too in love to walk. That’s where this song lives.

Trust at the end sounds different than trust at the beginning. “I trust / You completely / Finally / It means something to me.” Earned through wreckage. Built on the understanding that neither of you is leaving no matter how bad it gets. “Tell me please / Is there light within me / I’m drowning but / So In love.” Asking if there’s light left is the same as admitting you can’t see it anymore. The song doesn’t answer. It repeats the question until it stops sounding like a question and starts sounding like acceptance.

This track suffocates and I kept listening. Two people underwater holding onto each other because letting go feels worse. The guitars fade out distorted. The vocals drop after asking if there’s light left one more time. She’s drowning in love and chose this suffocation. The trust at the end means something it didn’t mean at the beginning. Love drowns you here. She stayed under on purpose and didn’t apologize for a goddamn second of it.
